She cannot file as single if you were married on the last day of the tax year. She may be able to file as head of household (under certain conditions, i.e. you are not together & you have a child that lives with her). If not, then you both need to file married filing jointly or individually as married filing separately.

If you are married, you do not have the option to file single. You can either file married filing jointly or married filing separately. She needs to amend her tax return. If she doesn't do it, the IRS will do it for her, but it will most likely be after April 17, so not only will she owe taxes to the IRS, but she will also have to pay interest and penalties.

She wouldn't be filing as "single", but rather as "married filing separately". You would also have to file as "married filing separately". Are you aware that there are sometimes advantages to filing "married, jointly"? Ideally you should do the return both ways to see which way is best for the two of you.

Why would she file as single? That is the one of the worst tax brackets to file in. Not to mention, that she technically should have filed as Married filing separately, not single.
I would recommend you file married filing separately, and get going on amending your wife's taxes ASAP.
BTW, is there a reason you two are not filing as married??

If she really filed single, and not married filing separately, then she filed illegally and needs to amend her return asap.
If she filed as married filing separately, then your only option is to also file as married filing separately.
