I think I may have made a major mistake on my taxes by accident and just realized it.

I e-file my taxes each year and use the "Free File" program. In 2005, I used a different program than 2004, but this year Turbotax was offering a better deal so I went back to them.

Because I had used them in the past, they had my 2004 return on file..I was just looking at it and discovered that I claimed the Hope Credit...I totally forgot and claimed it in 2005.

All the tax forms say is that you can't claim both the Hope and Lifetime Learning credits in the same year....but I thought the Hope credit was a one time deal.

Last year I filed my return and it was accepted by the IRS without a problem, so maybe I'm wrong.

Please someone with experience shed some light on this for me! If am wrong, can they hold my refund this year, can be charged fines or go to jail? Thank you

We had put our son into a daycare last year of March throughout the year but we were paying the daycare lady with personal checks. We once wrote out a check payable to her daycare but she was quick to ask us to re-write the check in her name. Well, here it is 2007, TAX TIME, and we had to request her tax info for filing purposes. First off, she completely ignores us and will not provide us with the EIN / SSN number (thats okay, we already reported it to the IRS) and we got copies of the checks (front and back) that we issued to her and she's made every single check payable to her sister. Do you think she is evading taxes by having her sister cash the check for her so she doesn't have to report income? Yes, yes, she may not have a checking account, but not giving someone your EIN/SSN for taxes (she COULD be tax-exempt but she still has to provide the information), ignoring phone calls/emails AND certfied letters..now this? What do you think??

If she does this (claim me and claims head of household) can i still d it? I made only $3,500 in 2006 and i am a student (i am 17). So shouldn't i be able to file and get most, if not all my money black (of coarse not SS). I was just wondering bc she is worried that it will mess up her taxes. If u answer please link me so i can be sure.

This will be my first year filing taxes in the state of IL. I am currently not enrolled into college but I worked part-time this past year and I earned about $4700. Is there anything I need to be aware of that can help benefit me or perhaps even something I need to be cautious about?

Also, I am not sure weather or not my parents claim me as a dependent or independent as I live at home and am unsure on how that will effect either mine or my parents taxes.

If my parents claim me as a dependent/indepenent how much money will benefit them?

If I claim myself as an independent/dependent how much money will benefit me?

Thanks!

Hello. I lost my job 1+ months ago and am now thinking of tapping into my IRA. Aside from the bank's penalty fee, what are the tax implications of doing this? I know I can get X amount out and if I return it (in full!) before 12/31 the IRS won't tax me. But what about if I withdraw the money (without the bank withholding)? How much should I set aside for taxes if I am not able to return the amount in full? Is this Federal and State or just Federal? Please, advise.

I am new to this, so when I was filing for my returns on turbotax, I noticed that when I was done filing for my federal returns, that sum of money went significantly smaller when I started my state returns. Does this mean that I am getting that amount back or am I getting 2 separate refunds, a state and federal? (Please, no smart a$$ comments, I just need someone nice to help me)
