I files my taxes and found out that my child was already claimed by someone else. The tax preparationer said that they had no idea.

The IRS isn't going to tell you. I assume that your efile was rejected, and that's how you found out this had happened.

Go ahead and file your return, and if you are the one who has the right to claim the child, claim him or her on your return. You'll have to mail the return. Include a note with the return saying that someone else has also claimed the child. Say in the note why YOU are the one with the right to claim the child.

This whole mess might hold up your refund for awhile while they sort it out, but if you are the one with the right to claim the child, you'll get it eventually.

As long as you can prove you are entitled to claim your child, you don't need to know. The IRS will take care of the other party. If you are not eligible to claim the child, you already know who is.

No way to find out.. the IRS won't tell you either. There'd be more murders if they did!
