I've been at my current job for only 4 months now and I am about to get engaged, which means I may be moving with my fiance (for his work) but I'm worried that it will look bad in the future, although I think engagement is a pretty good reason to quit a job. What do you guys think?

Bear with me here ...
I recieved an e-mail about a mandatory meeting. There was a section with the names of people required to go. To see the entire list, I needed to scroll down. I didn't notice that detail, so I didn't see my name.

That being said, the meeting hasn't passed, but my supervisor asked me to work an extra day. I said I would under the condition that I would not attend the meeting.

I thought it was not mandatory for me anyway. My supervisor didn't know either because he said that it was fine.

Well I think he mentioned something to our head manager because he called me and told me to attend the meeting instead of working an extra day. That's all he said though.

Now I'm worried that my head manager thinks poorly of me. I don't even see her because I work until 9am. That's when she gets in so I mostly answer to my supervisor.

These are the things that make recent college graduates realize the seriousness of carelessness in the professional world.

I was on unemployment for about 2 months. Then, about a month ago, I took a job with a new company. Unfortunately, that job has not lived up to it's promises. I would like to quit and go back on unemployment benefits until I find a more suitable job. Is that possible or am I stuck at the new job?

It's been 6 years since I've checked out the open job market and have had 3 jobs over the past 11 years.

It seems as the years go by, the resume submitting process has become more and more casual. When I first started applying for jobs, it would be a typed cover letter and resume that was sent via mail. Now a day, people submit resumes online, though various job sites, etc.

My question is, how big of a factor does a cover letter play in this day and age? It seems like everyone wants things to be straight and to the point and don't want to be bogged down with extra information/data to go though. However, in the past I know a cover letter could be used as an extra tool to sell yourself.

Is the cover letter still an important tool to use? As you build up more and more experience over the years, is it necessary to have?

I'm 40 years old and have been doing the same job (albeit with different companies) since I was 17. I am in a declining industry (worsted wool textile manufacturing) and have a specialised job with no apparent transferable skill (woven suiting fabric design). Although it is fairly well paid and has allowed me to travel to different countries I am bored rigid with it and can not see the industry lasting more than another 10 years (I have been made redundant several times in the last 23 years). There are other opportunities in sales and buying but I want out of textiles altogether.

Now the real problem - I have abslolutely no idea what I want to do! I have tried looking for careers advice in my area, but there are only DSS run services which are not set up to offer proper advice to people in my position.

Can anyone offer any sensible advice on how I could start changing career paths?

I started this job on Tuesday, it is 8 hours a day of doing the same monotonous tasks...and you do these tasks fast...anyway I hate it...yesterday I dident take a break...I worked eight straight hours, and today I would have done the same but I got so irritated that the manager never told me when I could take a break I got up and left for 15 minutes (see...if I want to take a break I have to deal with the backlog since it's none stop of the same task all day). Theres other things I don't like...anyway it makes me stressed out when I get home...I felt like puking today when I got home, my back hurts, and it's making almost depressed (I don't even remember what day it is...I have to think). Anyway I want to quit ASAP...but the managers scare me (I don't even know who my manager is...there is a different one whenever I am there). I want to leave as little notice as possible since I hate the job...my next shift is Wednesday...how do I quit?

I am 28 and single and have an extensive educational background. I studied for an MBA online in Global Technology Management and earned a MS in Teaching Mathematics. I also have a BS in Computer Science. Suprisingly, I still don't know what to do in life. I feel very stupid and so sad that I still don't know what to do after all of these degrees.

I have taught HS for the last 3 yrs (as my first real job) while earning the MS in Teaching Math and I disliked teaching. I've dealt with unruly kids, backbiting & lying administrators and pressure to pass on kids with poor skills. I quit my job this summer.

I have tried working going back to using my CS undergrad degree but I am not up to date with skills and have no experience. In fact, I tried getting a job when I graduated college in 2003 and didn't have luck.

I'm afraid to work in corporate America (after the politics I've dealt with in the school I've worked in. It is like I'm no longer interested in the fields I've studied.

I have been working at my job for 2 1/2 years (3 in Nov.). About a year ago we got a new boss. He didn't get along with our main supervisor (who was extremely popular), and drover her out of the company. Everyone was depressed and sad.

Most of us had no choice but to hang in there. I wasn't in a position to change jobs. I have done everything possible to be a good and outstanding employee. My reviews up to this point have been good.

The boss has always been fairly friendly towards me, and has complimented my work on occassion. However, all of the sudden his attitude towards me has shifted. He is now critical of me, and brings up a host of issues that he claims he has let me "slide on". I am baffled. My coworkers have even noticed and asked what is going on.

I'm no longer invited to meetings, lunches, and other functions. Some of my coworkers also seem to shy away from me. What's going on...should I look for another job?

I called the Resource office and left a message saying that i wanted to check the status on my application and to see if they were still hiring. The lady at Resources called me back to see the hours I was available to work each day of the week. After that she said if my schedule meets the requirements that Dierbergs wants that they will give me a call back. Its been 5 days what should I do? Help me please i really want this job.

I have never had a job before. It should be wasy since it's only bagging groceries, but still. It's a organic grocey store that I shop at all the time, and I figured I'd work there, since they hire at 15, and not many other places do. I'm kinda nervous, since I don't know what to expect. Tomorrow is my first day and I think I prepared as well as I could. I read the handbook, uniform is clean, and so forth... But I would still like some advice, like how to act, ECT...

Thanks!!

Is the job mine?
Am I on a 3 month probationary period?
Will I get paid for time spent there?
Is it like a working interview?
Is it a third interview? (I've had 2)
