Before you quit see if you can get a leave of absence for a few months to take care of you mother, but still have a job waiting for you. Or if they will cut your hours down due to family emergency. Seems to me would be the better route to go.

How often do you get paid? Is it every two weeks? If so, then a two week notice if sufficient. I am assuming you have employment at will and do not need a reason to quit.

Whatever reason you want to give, do not make it personal. Let them know you need to take care of your family and this particular job and its hours preclude you from other responsibilities.

Above everything else BUT GOD, your family comes first. There are company's out there that allow for such emergencies. If the stress is too much, then just admit that its too much and thank them for their time and patience. Leave on a good note for future references. Things will be okay! :)

tell them just that............You have a sick mother and the long hours you are working just aren't working out. They may even be able to help you with your workload......just explain everything, if they or you don't want to stick around then just let them know you are putting in your 2 weeks notice, but if need be can stay a bit longer.....that way you will be assured in having a good reference

They must think you are one of their best workers, that's a good thing. Have you thought about asking them if you could work part time or maybe cutting some of your hours back due to your mothers illness?

It sounds like you are nervous about putting in your notice because you feel like you will be letting them down. But you know what? Your sick mother is more important. You have to get past your need to please everybody and focus on what is important in your life. Trust me, they would do the same if they were in your shoes.

If you plan to continue working, find another job before quitting this one. Then, explain to your boss in a letter that due to family health issues, you must give notice of your intent to resign.

Be Honest. That is always the best way. It won't bur bridges and they'll appreciate it more down the road. You'll feel better about it as well.
