Are IT Consulting Firms a good place to start?

I'm looking for work and I know there are IT consultant companies around. They say they will give free training and depending on your training that you will be working? I'm not sure where something like this will lead to but I'm wondering if anyone has done this.

Not a bad place to start, but likely will be a lot of travel. Money is ususally pretty good, compared to office jobs.
