DON'T ANSWER IN MILLIONS! But if you could have a life-changing amount of money how much would it be and what would it be for (example - my friend wants £7,000 for cosmetic surgery).

I had about $10,000 in freelance/1099 earnings last year, which is enough that I'm getting more serious about deductions so I can avoid paying as much of that tax as possible. I'm a programmer, so I purchased a laptop and plan to deduct that and any hardware I purchased. I feel like it's a stretch, but was also wondering if home expenses (e.g. smoke detectors, new furnace, etc.) are deductible. Is there a way to characterize vacation as a business expense if I incidentally did business/work networking and someone from the trip ended up working with me as a direct result? And what are sort of the standard easy deductions -- charity, donations, etc.? Is there anything else?

I am divorced and have a 20 year old daugther in college. I pay her $103 in child support each week that goes directly to her. In my divorce papers my ex-wife and I are to take turns claiming our daughter on our income tax return. In the last 5 years I have claimed her once. Now my daughter lives on her own and the only support she receives is the child support I send her which is directly taken out of my paycheck by the state and mailed to her.
Today I found out my ex-wife claimed her on her taxes. Does my ex-wife have any right to claim my daughter even if she is not the custodial parent and pays no support or offer any other form of support to our daughter? How can I claim her now without getting into trouble with the IRS?

I subtracted the beta 1.03 from the VAR 5.34% and then received 4.31% which means that the firm-specific risk would be 95.69% using Total risk=systematic risk + specific risk.

Can that be true? Or is there another way to do it? I have to calculate what %age of total risk is systematic and specific risk and got nearly all measures like VAR, Beta etc.

How do I calculate this?

Thanks in advance for answers!
