If you're going to major in pharmacy, then just do that. If you're not yet out of high school, take a job in a pharmacy in the meantime, and every time that you can do so, talk with the pharmacist, explaining why, of course.

But a pharmacy tech generally requires a post-secondary education of a couple of years at least. Pharmacy itself isn't all that much longer a program.

Walgreen's isn't the only pharmacy chain around. And there are also independents.

In Illinois, it's required for pharmacies to train you.
An uncertified pharm tech will start at $8-$9 per hour. A certified pharm tech will start $1-$2 per hour higher.
In IL, all you need is a high school diploma to become a licensed pharmacy tech.
A true pharmacy student, not a prePharm student, will make a rather good salary.

My niece was a pharmacy tech. She got training through a community college. The pay is not that great but it is more than minimum wage. It's possible that the pharmacy you work for might help with college tuition.
Give it a try.

Most pharmacies will train you. I know that Walgreen's and Kroger and I think CVS will send you to classes and get you registered and they pay for it. Go in and apply. Good luck. FYI it is much harder work than most people realize.
