Philosophy - September 2007

I have a project in philosophy class to find an interesting ethical problem in the news of the past six months. I am looking for something unusual (other than the outsourcing to China and the lead paint or should Michael Vick be fired because of dog fighting or retained because he is good for ratings). It should also be something that is actionable (i.e. nothing about is the war in Iraq ethical or things like that that the average graduate will never have to face).
I would greatly appreciate if you could point me to a few articles that represent the ethical issues you are suggesting.
Thanks.

There are many who believe that there are those in your life that are your soul mates. This means that they come into your life, you learn a lesson (good or bad) and they leave your life. Soul twins, no matter what, always end up back together. They are somehow connected. You can also have one or several of each. Do you believe this to be true? What are your thoughts?

I think having a goal in life makes us stay focused and more able to see successes in our life. Of course, if the goal is unreachable or impossible, there will be limited or no success.
What is your goal? What are you doing to win that goal in your life?

It's a nice thought of course, but I think the chances of it actually happening are miniscule.
You'd think everyone wants it, but no.There are people out there who actually want war and destruction.
That very fact makes me want to take my own life.
All it takes is for one person to corrupt the minds of others and bring the whole system down.
Wouldn't it be great if we could divide the Earth and live with like-minded people?
One of the few occasions I think I'd advocate segregation.
I'm sorry. I don't know what on earth I'm bleating on about. I'm just in the strangest mood.
I'm still searching for my field of bees, pardon the BM reference.
Everything in this world disgusts me.
Howeever, I did meet a lovely young man recently. He's very courteous and intelligent. He has helped to restore some of my faith in the youth of today. I wish more people were like him.

Anyway, back to my original question. All answers and opinions welcome.

I'm a junior in college studying Public Relations and Journalism. Growing up in a small town, I knew that I always wanted to GET OUT of the state. I've always wanted to live in a big city, and live that fast paced life. My family is from a very small town, as is my boyfriend's family; he wants to stay near them. I feel like in the long run having a husband and a family is what will give you your true happiness in life, but I just don't think I would be content living in a small town my whole life and as a mom. I do want that, eventually, but there's so much else I want to do. I want to see the world, and truly make some sort of difference. I'm 20 years old, and I've been with my boyfriend for a year and a half. All of my friends seem to be really concerned about getting married. I do want to live in a big city and travel alot, but I also don't want to miss out on the little things in life, like being close to family and being in love. What do you think is best in the long run?

humans work in packs or community because a pecking order based on strength and dominance has been established. When our ape like ancestor gradually became more intelligent individual can rationally begin to question the power of the leader. Intelligence by it nature, questions authority by reason, and hence could be dangerous, dissipative force on that community. individual will leave the tribes, and that tribe would fall apar, and eventually individuals would die so, a selection pressure was place on intelligent apes to suspend reason and blindly obey the leader and his myth, since doing other wise would challange the tribes cohesion. survival favored the intelligent ape who could reason rationally about tools and food gathering but also favored the one who could suspend that reason when it threatened the tribe integrity. A mythology was needed to define and preserve the tribe. Religion was a powerful tool that "glue" and held together the tribe. Religion is a genetic disorder

Does it truly benefit the vengeful or is it unhealthier for them in the long run?

You always hear it never actually helps, but I'd really like to hear an answer from someone who has actually fulfilled their vengeance.

I'd also like to know if you think war, out of retaliation, is also pointless simply due to the above reason.

I was at the Greenwich Observatory this weekend. And I was looking around at the space museum that they have. And I found it rather fascinating, but also realised how hopeless life really is.

The average person may live to see 70 years of age. What's 70 years in the vastness of the universe?! It's a joke! And when you think of units such as 'millions of light years', you start to realise how very little we actually know about how we got here, and exactly why we're on this planet.

What's the point of preserving a species and a planet, that must inevitably disintegrate. What's the point of life? And how can one derive some kind of meaning from such a hopeless and pointless task? because eventually everything will die...
