I'm exploring this question as part of my English final, so I would appreciate lots of answers :-D. When I first started looking into this question, I was skeptical, but now I have gathered a lot of supporting evidence. One would assume that joining the Peace Corps is one of the most selfless things you can do, but there are some monetary benefits as well as the opportunity to learn a new language and skills for the buisness world. However, the movie Pay It Forward is a perfect display of how a young boy sparks random acts of kindness all over the area in which he lives for the sole reason of changing the world. But does the fact that we feel good after these selfless acts make it selfish? And what about people like Bill Gates donating large amounts of money to charity versus anonymous donations? Is the glorification of selfless people sometimes the only reason for these acts taking place? Does true selflessness exist? Just some things to think about.

Epicurus divides the class of natural desires into two sub-classes: desires that are both natural and necessary and desires that are natural but not necessary. What does he mean by necessary and unnecessary desires, and why does he regard it as important that we distinguish between them?

his argument for the proof of god i heard is the best.

BTW he did NOT prove the existence of a religous or christian god. he proved that there had to be some kind of deity. what that deity is we cannot know but we can know by his proof that the deity exists

I want to be the best person I can for myself. I mean, I want to do it for God too, but sometimes I feel like I can't live up to everything He wants me to be. I feel like I put a weight on myself to be absolutely perfect for Him, and then it's hard to live day by day being careful of everything that I do. I know everyone makes mistakes, but I worry so much about it and I don't know what to do. Please help!

Do you take their side, those who would dismiss half-truths as nonexistant? If so, please help me understand your point of view.

This one young lady on here remarked to me that there is no such thing as half-truths. Either something is true or false. Do you agree?

What happened to the myriad shades of grey that can exist? Are people so narrow minded that they cannot see anything except black and white? Feast or famine? Where does such polarized thinking come from?

I have a problem with "axioms" that people idolize, as if they were the gospel, when they are not. Let me give some examples:

"You can't judge a book by its cover"- but wouldn't you agree that sometimes, we can (and do) judge people at first glance?

"Change is always good"- No. Only if it is for the better, says I.

"Time heals all wounds"- Time heals nothing.

What do you think?

Just watched an absolutley distressing video of a beheading in iraq.

I then got to thinking about all the bad stuff that happens in the world, like wars, child molesting & murder.

How can you go on feeling good about life, when you know stuff like this goes on in the world?

I'm supposed to go on travelling soon, and I feel as if the world is such a horryfing place that I shouldn't risk it.

Why are you scared of death? Do you think you will feel pain if you die, do you think it will hurt if your heart stops? Why are you scared of it? My reason for being scared is,well, I don't have one. For me it's just human nature to be scared, even though I don't believe I will hurt if my heart stops, but I'm scared as heck. So why are you scared?

A architect/builder friend of mine has an issue with my plan to flip a house. He can't really explain because he doesn't have much of a vocabulary or mind for philosophical debate. But I want to give him the benefit of the doubt by calling on any would be philosophers out there to give him a hand with his opinion? Other than the fact that it's pretty capitalistic, is there something philosophically wrong with flipping?
