First you have to decide what criteria you think compose a great person. Some people measure greatness by how successful they are in their job. Some people think greatness is tied to their moral or religious fiber. Some people think that honesty and integrity are most important. Some people measure themselves by their family. Some people think that greatness comes from how popular or well known they are.
Once you figure out what would make you great you will be able to act appropriately to become the kind of person you see as great.

By walking your walk and talking your talk. Having integrity, interest in someone and something other than yourself or your little world. By being of service to someone else. By being passionate about something , a cause, an idea, rather than being apathetic and whining.
Taking responsibility for your actions , words and deeds and living with the consequences of them.
Being grateful for what you have no matter how little or how much.
By being gracious and kind to whomever you meet irregardless of their status or religion or race or disability or sexual orientation or gender.
Developing empathy and the ability to walk in someone else's shoes other than your own.

It depends on how you define great, and if you want to feel you are great, or if you feel you want others to feel or think you are great. If you are focused on what others think about you, and you define yourself by those terms, you are setting yourself up for a lifetime of disappointment. If you feel you are great in your own mind and heart, that's a good place to start.
I don't mean be conceited. I mean examine yourself to see if you are satisfied with who you are. If not, don't beat yourself up. Just forgive yourself for being a fallible human being, then vow to do better. And do it. If you fall short of who you want to be and how you want to behave, keep trying. Beating yourself up for falling short of the mark is counter-productive and not healthy.
Instead of self-esteem, strive for universal self acceptance. Then it won't matter what others feel or think about you.

A wise man, I think Aristotle, once said "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is thus a habit." If you want to be great, practice greatness every day until it becomes habit. Do great things.

Depends on how u define what 'great' means to you. To me, a great person, is a great human being first. Someone who has integrity, and a pure heart. Someone who is very loving and committed to their family, friends, work. Meaningful work.

Discern your gifts. Cultivate humility. Give your gifts away. Detach yourself from the need for praise and expect nothing in return for your actions of generosity.

If you want to be great, empty yourself and focus to something greater than you are. Don't be selfish, and ask great power of God....
