How do we really know what's ethical and what's not?
Is there some thing as a "universal moral compass", or are really moral values a completely relative thing?

Try to step back for a second from the ethics you gained by tradition or religious following... how do you know that they are correct?
In what standard should we base ourselves to define our personal ethics? Who, or what, defines and constitutes right and wrong?

I have my own answer to this question, but I want to see what other people think about this.

By touched...I mean someone out there in this vast world...Loves you, needs you...desires you....cares for you..Floods your entire soul with pleasure...Someone who is touched...touches others you see....
So.....are you touched? And if so....by whom?....How do they touch you?....
Thank you

it is true that the many portions of the bible are indeed factual and have been written long ago by the followers of one of those true people that actually existed, but as the bible passed through mankinds' hands over the years especially when it was still being written, it has been altered in ways that benefit man more and more. As I say, give a man anything and he will use it to his own personal benefit.

If you think about it, without a leader to help and guide us, humankind cannot easily or at all cooperate peacefully with themselves and only themselves with no guidance. Thus, we create idols, known as gods, to follow and to believe in.

Satan (the Devil) is indeed the source of all evil, but if you believe in the War of Heaven, then it was God who had originally created the angels and had given some of them free will. Those whom he gave free will eventually betrayed him and fell to become devils and demons. So did God intentionally mean for Satan to fall?

ha-satan is the (or one of the) actual names of Satan before he fell from heaven. Lucifer is the commonly mistaken name of Satan before he fell. This mistake spawned from a misreading in the book of Isaiah.

My favorite one is The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. by Socrates, or As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.

It means that recognizing that you don't know it all and that there are many things in this world to learn makes you truly wise. There are many people in this earth that arrogantly claim that they know it all and put others down because they think they lack intelligence, when the reality is that the person is the true ignorant. When you accept you don't know it all but you are willing to learn the unknown then that makes you truly wise.

What's your favorite one?

Someone just posted that evolution is fiction (in response to a quite antagonistic question from someone else). Surely even as a spiritual person you have to consider that an ancient mythical explanation of how the world was created and populated doesn't really hold up against plain science. I'm actually reading Darwin at the mo...

For some reason, I can't think of anything. My mind draws a blank.

Well, I can think of, perhaps, two things:
1. God
2. Human behavior

Now, I love God, and I believe he exists- but I do not think that he is logical.

And psychology- well, I don't think it...I don't think it is a science. Not to say that science is always perfect, but I think that it involves precision and rock-solid answers. But psychology? It's guesswork, is it not?

Please provide any examples of things in the world that are not logical. Thanks!

If you had days to live without a heart transplant, and a healthy one became available from a recently deceased man who was known to have raped and murdered children, would you accept it?

Would your answer differ if you were the desperate parent of a child in need of the transplant, and the surgeon sought your authority to replace your childs failing heart with that of the healthy rapists?
