There's plenty of common sense out there - It's just not easy to see it in the midst of all the idiocy, because it doesn't call attention to itself, and doesn't make good headlines..

This is the product of Political Correctness. Commonsense was a valued skill one brought to the workplace and to relationships in years past. Now, try to bring such sense to the workplace and listen to the silence as all try to determine if it meets the PC word check. You have all had the experience of watching a supervisor intervene and rephrase the statement in a way that will not offend anyone present. If Mr. or Ms. Big (i.e. managment) is present, Mr. Commonsense will be closely watched from there on and will not be successful in a promotions interview. Also, those who are ambitious will distance themselves from such a scoundrel and realign themselves with any manager who expresses concern. That is also called @ss kissing and we all know who those people are in our work environment. At last, the least talented are running things - certainly in government, national, state and local.
And we are at war and on the brink of so many tragedies yet supervisors everywhere will not allow profiling on flights in the U.S. lest they be labeled a "racist." The only racists I know are the Activists in this country. No sense there, common or uncommon.

I think common sense has been scarce all through time. You will all ways have people who do not think through situations or problems. However, there is a smaller percent that do. I do not mean they always do, for even the smartest or the wisest people lack common sense from time to time; but you will find people that stay somewhat consistent. Do I think common sense is more of a scarcity now than it was then? I have no way of telling; for one cannot measure the amount of common sense present in two (or more) separate times.

I think it is, and that the reason is probably TV. A lot of it seems to have the sole purpose of planting opinions and attitudes directly into the viewer's mind. That's one way, and another is just by eliminating any need to use the mind, where TV becomes a replacement for actually living one's own life. It's great for giving the mind a rest in a confusing and frantic world, but the mind works like a muscle and too much rest of either leads to atrophy. Use it or lose it, etc....

if i owned a small business i would replace the tests[ given by employer's] and replace them with common sense questions . i also believe new parents should have to pass a common sense test, new drivers, old drivers, in fact i think every human being should have to take a common sense test at the age of 18 and every 10 years after that.

Yes! I believe the gene for it is beginning to become wiped out in the whole human race.Look at our so called leaders.Look at the generations coming up now.Lack of it is corrupting our whole society. It's being replaced with greed and the lowest moral standards I've ever seen.Just listen to some of the Q&A here.

Oh Yea! I deal with at least 300 or more people per day due to my job and I can say that maybe one out of every 20 may actually have common sense. ('o')

I can hardly find a decent employee who can think on their feet. Everyone seems to think, and react only through their emotions without the least bit of logic and it is all through their own needs and not for the larger good. They think they are using logic but it really self interest.

indeed it is. but thats only because we now have several different groupings of common sense.
instead of everyone having the same base of common sense weve now got about 5 different bases of common sense and so eveyrone thinks everyone else is an idiot.
which version of common sense is the right one? mine of course.

Yes. We've become a society so 'specialized' in our work, common sense doesn't figure in the picture.
