My family (which was Jewish) came from Latvia around 1886.
Another family with the same (uncommon) surname (which was Lutheran) came from Sweden about 1884.
I think that there were Jewish conversions to Christianity in Germany in late 1700s and that Sweden was a power on the continent around then.
Is there a chance that these two families are related?
Our surname is also a place name in Switzerland and Germany, so it is possible that the families were independantly named after the same place.
Any info on the Jewish to Lutheran angle?

After doing some research on the Celts I have gotten the impression that the Celts originated from Scythia along with the Anglo's, Saxons, and many other European ethnic groups.

Is this true for all Celts or is it just for the Irish Celts (sons of Mil)?

Also to my understanding the Celtic peoples and Germanic people's can all be traced back to Scythia and have common ancestors.

I have two questions.

2.) Can someone make an account for me and tell me the username/ password, since my computer wont let me.

As of now, I'm using Family Tree Maker 2005. It's the free starter addition that I've downloaded for my new computer. (The old computer had some other programs, and I'm pretty sure the one I used the most was an older version of Family Tree Maker. Although I used it for countless hours, I can't even remember that program's name, haha.) Of course, some features are locked, as this is the free version. However, I'm hesitant to pay to unlock if because frankly, the older version (in which more features were free, actually), was much better.

So what does everyone else use? And, I'm also wondering if you're like me in that you always try to find a new program with some neat functions only to find out that it manipulates the GEDCOM in some weird way. My old program might not be the best, but I'm more used to it, so trying out different ones can be a bit frustrating.

I asked this question previously. A teacher in my hometown wanted her high school students to do their genealogy. One man in the town protested as he knew of some children who had things in their immediate family history that had been traumatic for the mother and one of their aunts, because of a hideous crime their grandmother commited.
The grandfather of the children thanked the man after he was successful at getting the school board to put a stop to it. He had moved his two little girls who were about 6 and 8 at the time the crime was committed from a particular school district because of the pain they sufferered.
Even if the genealogy is turned in to the teacher only, what business is it of the teacher???? Out of a class of 25, there is most likely a child that will have something in their close family history that the family wants to keep private. Do any of you think the teachers or anyone else has a right to intrude in family's private business?

Keep in mind that "deep ancestry" and the Genographic Project have nothing whatever to do with genealogy. That is so far back it's about hunter-gatherers armed with rocks roaming the planet, displacing one another geographically whether by force or sometimes a more attractive culture, and exchanging genes -- but not keeping genealogically useful records, only at best the fossil record.
