www.houseofnames.com says the name deWeever originated with the Old English word WEFAN, meaning "a person who weaves cloth from long strands of fiber." The name was brought to England with the wave of migration from France's Normandy region following the Norman Conquest of 1066. By the way: "de" is also French for "of" (if the next word starts with a vowel, it is written as d' --as in Jeanne d'Arc or Joan of Ark).
www.ancestry.com shows these listings on an immigration page: LILY DEWEEVER, b.1897 in Georgetown, British Guyana; CARL DEWEEVER, b. 1901 in St. Martins, Virgin Islands; JULES E. , b. 27 March 1871 in the Dutch West Indies; and LEO A. , b. about 1870 in the West Indies.

DeWeevers didn't have anything to do with ******* slavery! The DeWeever name is Dutch and most of the ancestors come from the island of St Martins... don't disrespect my family name with that bull ****! the earliest signs of DeWeevers migrating to North America weren't until the late 1800's and most are or were located in New York and New Jersey... Do some damn research before you try and disgrace the name of great people. My great grandfather had a road named after him in a Newburgh, New York. I had a great cousin that was a sergeant in the United States Marines during world war 2 and my great uncle was in the Navy during world war 2! The DeWeever name is a name of pride and honor. Don't tarnish it with that crap!

It means 'of," just like you thought. Often this refers to a town that the family came from originally, or it can refer to an occupation. Perhaps they were weavers once upon a time.
