i was reading my history book, and it says "the late President's daughter, Caroline, almost age 6"

It means the person has recently died (generally within the past few years). Once the death is widely known, or the person would obviously be dead due to the amount of time that has passed (you wouldn't refer to the "late George Washington," for example) the word is usually dropped.
