I'm on the verge of possibly writing a story that features fantasy characters like witches, elves, wizards, and so on. I was inspired by a lot of fantasy books like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and one thing I was curious about was the authors' inspiration of coming up with spells and languages. I suppose some looked at old languages or latin and drew from them. Is that their explaination for it? I didn't exactly look at the history of how they did it.
The way it's written, it makes it seem like it's a language used all around. For instance, elf language. I read a few stories here and there with elven language and names, and I've never really looked at the difference in their creation, but I assume they are unique for the tale. Anyways, what are some of your opinions/suggestions on creating spells and languages. I'm especially curious when it comes to the evlen language. I've been to the site where you can create elven names from a generator, but I'm trying to avoid that.

I collect Tom Robbins' books, and have some wonderful first edition softcovers. I've heard about adhesive covers, but am afraid that would diminish the value. Does anyone know what the standard method for preserving paperbacks is?

All I want to be is a poet/author when I'm done with school (which is many, many years away, i just want to know for what i want to do with my life ahead of time) but unless your like jk rowling and your books are famous, writers don't seem to make money by just writing usually they have other jobs too.
My problem is the only thing I'm good at is writing fiction and poetry so i'm not sure what else i'd be good at........
any ideas?

A person in a book, who makes you feel like you want to be the same as her/him, a sort of idol. Or simply catches you by the unique personality.

In all the writing books I have, it says to determine what your main character wants. As I try to analyze books that I've read, I'm having a hard time determining what the character wants so that I can see how this affects the plot exactly and at what point that desire shows up in the book...

So if you have read any of these books, could you tell me what you think is the real desire of the main character?

Twilight
(I see Bella's first desire, as - fitting in, or just surviving something she feels she has to do, but doesn't really want to do. But she ends up on a totally different journey. Eventually, she wants Edward and later, wants to become a vampire. So which one is "what the main character wants?")

Harry Potter (Use Book 1)

Fablehaven

Eragon

Dracula

Secondary Question -- Does the main character need to know what it is they want at the beginning of the book, or is that something that comes about with the presentation of events?

I dont want answers like - Harry Potter
Is there any book that teaches about life, faith, and not just preaches.
Something sensible
I liked 'Tuesdays with Morrie'
It surely is a good book, it tries to teach but succedes to an extend and not beyond that.
Is there any larger than life book out there ?
