Keep a dream diary for about a fortnight and then mix all your dreams together, add bits to it and change certain bits aswell and mix it in with a personal experience.

Ideas will generally come to you - if you were meant to write. If you think about it too hard and too often, it becomes strenuous and writing will feel like a chore, rather than something you enjoy.

If a novel is forced out by a writer in that sense, chances are the novel will go over like a lead balloon.

What you should get in your mind, however, is what kind of genre you are interested in writing about. Decide that - then ideas will slowly begin to filter through your mind.

Don't think--"I want to write something.." and then think really hard for an idea. It will come to you, maybe when you least expect it. Keep a little notebook and if you suddenly have a moment of inspiration, write it down. Sometimes you can base things on dreams that you have, also it's fun to loosely base characters on real people you know so they are more realistic. Above all--don't criticize yourself. Don't shoot down your own ideas. It takes time to become a prolific writer, so don't be afraid to try new things or to write something even if you think other people might not like it.

Try to look for something unusual in what you see every day. Seeing special in common things is what makes you a creative person. Try to use your fantasies or dreams (as some people here alredy advised you). Your dreams are your subconscience, so why not let them out on paper or screen? Try to find interesting phrases, some wordplay or metaphor, which would help you see something new in your characters. After all, you can just write anything that comes to your mind. "I can't find anything to write about. It all seems so dumb and dull" is a beginning nonetheless.

Don't restrict yourself. Writer's block is a self-produced affliction -- it isn't real. You can write in any genre or about anything, just when you find out what your story yearns for let your subconscious do the talking. Don't think your way through a story, fiction comes from deeper sensualities and moment-to-moment experience. If you are truly a writer, you cannot possibly go a day without being inspired. Just follow that inspiration, it's your subconscious trying to tell you something...

When I started writing my book (not yet published) I combined two dreams I had into one and started writing it from there.

Write about what you know best - you. Start with an interesting/funny/weird experience you've had, then build on that.
