Please help me identify some rhetorical devices found in "The Red Badge Of Courage". If you could cite your pages or provide me with anything on the author's style that would be great.

I have read The Grapes of Wrath twice, All Quiet on the Western Front about 3 times, and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch twice. What good books have you read more than once?

Take Hemingway - he's had a life full of adventure, was a journalist, drove an ambulance in WWII. Things of the like. And now take Jack London, who spent most of his time in libraries. And yet, I'd pick Jack London over Hemingway any day - simply because his novels are so full of the before mentioned sense of adventure. Do you really have to experience a lot of things first-hand to be a good writer? What do you think?

Here is the poem by Edgar Lee Masters, and I need an explanation. I actually have to act this out.

Seeds in a dry pod, tick, tick, tick,
Tick, tick, tick, like mites in a quarrel--
Faint iambics the the full breeze wakens--
But the pine tree makes a symphony thereof.
Triolets, villanelles, rondels, rondeaus,
Ballades by the score with the same old thought:
The snows and the roses of yesterday are vanised;
And what is love but a rose that fades?
Life all around me here in the village:
Tragedy, comedy, valor and truth,
Courage, constancy, heroism, failure--
All in the loom, and oh what patterns!
Woodlands, meadows, streams, and rivers-
Blind to all of it all my life long.
Triolets, villanelles, rondels, rondeaus,
Seeds in a dry pod, tick, tick, tick,
Tick, tick, tick, what little iambics,
While Homer and Whitman roared in the pines?

I've not read too many of his recent books, so maybe orcs pop up there... but it struck me recently that orcs don't really feature in the discworld setting at all. Trolls, yes... Werewolves, yes... Witches, dragons, zombies, vampires, dwarves and elves, yes yes yes... and wizards, of course... about every fantasy staple there is, but no orcs- why is that?

Stuck

Here I am stuck in this small town
Where there is very little work to be found
I’ll probably be here for the rest of my time
Because of a past horrendous crime
It started with a social drink or two
But then it took off and just grew and grew
I thought I could handle it by myself
Till I took the life of someone else
I was arrested and charged by the local fuzz
And groups like MADD & SADD were all a buzz
They wanted to see me pay dearly for my crime
So the courts gave me the maximum time
So while in prison I sought some aid
And thanks to therapy I’m still sober today

I'm looking for books of a drama/morbid genre. The best way i can describe the kind of books i'm after is to use movie examples. American Beauty, The Safety in Objects, The Quiet and even Ghost World. Basically, the secrecy of 'normal' suburbian life, with the angst and introspective vibe. Not so much to do with teenage angst, something a bit more towards adult reading.
I'll appreciate any suggestions you can give me though sooooo go for it!
