Just recently read Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire concerning the Battle of Thermopylae. Good book. I'm in the midst of several series of novels from different authors, all of which I'd recommend:
Colleen McCullough's "First Man in Rome" series which deals with the final years of Rome's Republic
Bernard Cornwell's "Saxon" series dealing with 9th century England, Alfred the Great and Vikings
George R.R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones: A Song of Fire and Ice" which is a fantasy series closely resembling the period of the Wars of the Roses from English history

I've been picking up older titles reprinted through the New York Review of Books Classics series. Surprisingly good stuff here! I'd recommend:

MARY OLIVIER: A LIFE, by May Sinclair
THE SIEGE OF KRISHNAPUR, by J.G. Farrell
TROUBLES, by J.G. Farrell
A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY, by J.L. Carr

Also finally got around to Edward Jones' THE KNOWN WORLD, Gregory Maguire's SON OF A WITCH, and Diane Sutterfield's THE THIRTEENTH TALE, all of which I'd recommend, for different reasons.

BTW I love this title. It is really shocking how many kids come on here to have people do their homework for them.

The best book I have read lately was Rosary Girls by Richard Montanari (?)

However, ANY MOMENT I could take to recommend The Kite Runner, I will take it...

MUST READ.
