I'd say the main character - though he's a really bad guy - is Robert Donige.
Edward Johnston's assistants (past-obsessed historian, Andre Marek and cliff-face climber Kate Ericson) are the real heroes of the book, but the evil Donige is the major player.

The "main character" doesn't have to be the "hero" - look at how Satan dominates Milton's "Paradise Lost."

It's been a while since I read it but I think it would be the guy that decides to stay in thet time and marry the girl.

I think the protagonist was Andre Marek.

I mean, the guy did wield a broadsword.
