An excerpt is just a passage, paragraph, or section of the work that is meaningful. Sometimes instructors/teachers want larger excerpts so look at your assignment sheet/directions.

If there are no directions, I would go for a paragraph that is significant for the story, where the plot takes a turn, or where a character reveals something about him/herself.

Good luck with your assignment...

To excerpt something is when you take a passage or segment from a book, document or film and use it in your own work as a quotation. You also have to give credit to where you got that information from.

In other words, find a paragraph from the book you are reading that you think is interesting (maybe something she said or a fact about her childhood) and use it in the paper you are writing.

An excerpt is a part of the book. In this case probably something that you find important, or is relevant to the course you're taking.

It's just a passage in the book (a part of a chapter, say) and likely one that made a big impression on you.
Do you have to write about the excerpt then?

An excerpt is a paragraph or group of sentences that has special meaning and importance for you. What you do is to quote this excerpt in your paper, analyze the meaning, and tell what it means you you and why you selected it.
