Richard Connell's the main deadly game written in 1924 is an marvelous short tale that tells the story of a brilliant game hunter touchdown on an island owned via a madman and forced to apply skills to stay to tell the story being hunted himself. I recomend it wholehartedly.

I would have to say MArk Twain still has the best short stories. I would suggest the following three...
The Man Who Corrupted Hadleburg
Cannibalism in the Cars
The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County
but just about any you find from him will be equally entertaining.

i prefer Oscar Wilde
for his satire in "The Canterville Ghost'
his sensitivity in 'The Happy Prince'
his humour,sensibility and the element of surprise in 'The Model Millionaire'
all i all i admire his clarity of thoughts in terms of philosophy and his perception of the world,his impeccable articulation of the same and the lucidity of his presentation.
i believe he is one of the greatest writers of all times.
