I'm the book mender at a local library, and a Captain Underpants book came across my bench yesterday. I decided to see what the hype was about and started reading a few pages. I was STUNNED!

I thought people bought books for children to help them learn how to read and spell.... this trash does neither!

Rather than use "their" in a sentence, such as "their powers" the author uses "there". Rather than "able", "abel". When else did a Biblical character make his debut in a secular children's illustrated novel? Tow dramatic errors in four pages of text.

Has the job of editor been eliminated from books for children?
Do authors not care that children learn how to read and write from the trash they spew?
Is there no sense of responsibility when writing for children?

For me, I think this may be the beginning of a crusade for better children's literature. Maybe it's time to start a column critiquing children's books.

It makes sense now why many people have problems spelling.

What is the underlying message of Gogol's "The Nose"? How can someone's nose become so rebellious, cause its owner so much anxiety and anguish and suddenly re-appears after being arrested! Yet the writer simply explains at the end of the tale that "these things do happen"! Is there some profound message I am missing here?

They don't have to be books that came out this year.

My fave fiction was The Ruins by Scott Smith. A lot of people hated it (check amazon), but I could not put it down. Read it in two days.

Fave non-fiction: The Perfect Thing by Stephen Levy about the iPod. Utterly fascinating. No two copies are alike as, in keeping with the spirit of iPod, the chapters have been shuffled... BUT, they each stand on their own as separate essays.

Of course the killer whale escapes and takes charge of a pod of killer whales. In the mean time, an aircraft crash lands on a ice flow in the arctic. The rogue killer whale & survivers of the crash are destined to meet at the end. But until then the book describes, from the rogue killer whale's view, it's exploits. A scuffle with walruses is one example. I read this book in the early 1980's and for the life of me can not remember the author or title. Perhaps someone here can help.

It is about a land which was colonised. The original inhabitants are shunned and treated as if they just dont exist. Any of the colonisers who consort with them are also outcast. It has in it a man of power who is making a statue of his friend the Dictator (I think) and he is outcast, I thought it was called city of illusions but have found two books of this name that are not this story. It was a truly great story and I would love to refind it.
