In Sembene Ousmane's "Xala", in your opinion, what is the cause for his condition?

Do you mean Kader the character or Ousmane the writer? Kader is simply pompous and confused, representing the new breed of post-colonial ruling class that Sembene satirizes. He marries a young wife younger than his daughter, when his daughter speaks to him in native language, he replies in French, when he speaks in woloff at the Chamber of Commerce, he emerges an idiot. He is neither fish nor fowl as his future mother in law observes. He cannot be white french man that he foolishly imagines to be. And he cannot "deflower" his woman as traditional ceremony requires.

I had to watch that film! The ending really grosses me out. If I remember right, the cause of his condition is because a beggar put a curse on him (hence the spitting at the end). However, I think it was also because of the responsibility of taking on a younger third wife, and how he couldn't be as verile in sex anymore. Plus, the first and second wife were bugging him a lot, along with his daughter who felt what he was doing was wrong.

How many articles do you need? You might try wikipedia, sometimes they have links to articles. Otherwise, perhaps your school library? Or the closest college library if you're not in college.
