They don't have to be books that came out this year.

My fave fiction was The Ruins by Scott Smith. A lot of people hated it (check amazon), but I could not put it down. Read it in two days.

Fave non-fiction: The Perfect Thing by Stephen Levy about the iPod. Utterly fascinating. No two copies are alike as, in keeping with the spirit of iPod, the chapters have been shuffled... BUT, they each stand on their own as separate essays.

My new favorite book is _Cloud Atlas_ by David Mitchell. Instead of a traditional novel or short story format, it has six different stories in it that all fit into each other, a little like those Russian wooden dolls I used to play with as a kid. It takes on the EXTREMELY daunting task of analyzing (through fiction) why our society is the way it is today and where it might go from there, if we stay on the same path. It's not at all preachy, though! You can read it through in a couple of days if you're a fast reader, or you can spend weeks studying it to get all the fabulous nuances. I recommended it to my mom, who normally only reads to fall asleep, but she couldn't put it down and has started recommending it to all her friends!

I re-read Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins series--I'd read the first four before, and am now in the process of catching up. I adore this series.

And--I had to look back at my read-books log--Zuleika Dobson by Max Beerbohm. As much as I love Oscar Wilde, who was a great friend of the author, I have to say this book is the best example of Victorian wit at its dryest and most over-the-top. Utterly hilarious.

King Fortis the Brave, Harry Potter and Eragon were all great! I also tried reading DiVinci Code, but don't know what the hype was all about. I couldn't even finish it.
