I am a budding writer. I started writing about a story idea that seemed very promising then got totally and completely stuck. My story is a satire about a near future academy which –thanks to a revolutionary surveillance technology-is capable of studying sentient civilizations on distant planets. I created 3 interesting characters(religious female scholar, haughty male scientist, creative male pacifist with whole the religious scholar is in love) and I described the academy, the technology, a few interesting lessons gained from studying other civs, and then I'm out of fuel, unable to invent the struggle necessary to keep all stories interesting. Do you have any suggestions to keep my story going on?Some spice, some struggle or problem that needs to be resolved and gets the reader involved?

I have two overrated: 'Moby Dick' and 'War and Peace'. Both were crashing bores, but I read them all the way through so I never have to read them again!

Underrated: this was tough to pick. I love reading mysteries and a lot of writers in this genre get little or no respect in popular culture. They'll get good reviews, but their work is looked on as disposable literature.
'H for Homicide' by Sue Grafton, the 8th book in her Kinsey Milhone series, is the best of the "alphabet mysteries". I read it maybe 10 years ago, and the story has still stayed with me. Kinsey goes undercover to expose a car insurance fraud ring... which sounds boring, but it was very intense. Comes with a "Holy sh!t!" surprise ending, too!

Since I'm not familiar with the novels by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, I'd appreciate some readers who enjoy reading his novels, especially, 'Crime and Punishment', 'The Idiot', 'The Possessed', and 'The Brothers Karamazov'. I also would like to hear some literary comparisons between his works and Tolstoy's. Thanks.

I'm trying to remember a book I read when I was a little kid. I don't remember much about it. It's about a boy who is transported to...the future, I think? Anyways, he gets transported to the future and he strats out in this jungle type place. All the animals are similar to the ones we have on Earth, but also different. Later on in the story, he finds a cillage type thing, and their most sacred artifact is a coke bottle they found, and he realizes its the future. Anyone recognize this book?

There was a children's book I read as a little girl which was a Japanese retelling of Cinderella. It had a white cover and the ballgown was made out of fish scales.... the Cinderella character had to carry water through the town and smelled of fish. Anyone know the title or author?

9/11

September 11th, 2001
Just like yesterday.
Starting 4th grade,
the smell of summer fun going away,
then when I get home,
I could swim through the tenseness.
Our nation had been attacked
by people who don’t know
the excitement of freedom.
Me, there, laying,
knowing innocent
people were being killed.
Not doing anything.
Feeling the anger of sickness.
Seeing towers of red
falling to the ground.
I smelt something wrong that day,
but didn’t tell anyone.
I loved the feeling of freedom,
but now im wondering,
is that even possible?
