Do you mean in the USA or England?

There have been no women named as Poet Laureate of England, and the post has been filled since Ben Jonson held it in 1616. In England it is a lifetime appointment, and there have only been 21 holders of the title.

In the USA, there have been 42 Poet laureates, each serving a 2 year term, and 9 of those have been women. Below are listed the United States Women Poet Laureates.

* Louise Bogan 1945-46
* Leonie Adams 1948-49
* Elizabeth Bishop 1949-50
* Josephine Jacobsen 1971-73
* Maxine Kumin 1981-82
* Gwendolyn Brooks 1985-86
* Mona Van Duyn 1992-93
* Rita Dove 1993-95
* Louise Glück 2003-2004

Interestingly, the two American Women with Nobel Prizes in Literature, Pearl S. Buck and Toni Morrison, have not been offered the position of Poet Laureate. Perhaps because Ms. Buck was more of a novelist, that omission is understandable. But Ms. Morrison is one of our great poets, and should be on the Laureate List.
