Can you recomend me some good Sci-fi books?

I've just finished reading "I am legend" by Richard Matheson, and I enjoy Michael Crichton's books (particularly "Prey").

Both books I found brilliant, but can anyone recomend me some good ones to read? One thing I really liked about the above two books were that although they were sci-fi, they make a good scientific approach to explaining the phenomena.

I also liked Arthur C Clarkes short stories where the emphasis is not on the actual explaining of the technology, but more on it's effects of such things upon human nature. To an extent, much in the same way as Mary Shelley's "frankenstein" went into more detail about the monsters reception in the public arena, as opposed to the physialogical in's and out's.

I think I'm trying to say that I prefer Sci-fi where the author makes a real attempt to integrate the fiction part in a realistic way (as opposed to klingons and photon torpedo's etc etc etc).

What is the proper word for it?

What is the Bar called, the one which is lifted up for the cars to pass under it... It is used for stopping the cars and people... Often used as a roadblock.....
Hope u get what I mean.... Its so commonly found, but I need the exact name for it...

what's the title of this book?

It's a book by Eve Bunting and it's about these teenagers that drive home past this famously dangerous point and one of them (Vicky?) dies. Then she meets the other ghosts of people who died there and together they convince the townspeople to make that place less dangerous (it involves balloons with the names of the people who died there). I read it when I was about 11, which is 15 years ago. Thanx!

I think i'm a born writer, but what do i do.?

I can write a poem or story in five seconds flat about anything anywhere, it just comes out of me. I would love to take it further and perhaps publish a story or poem as my room is fillled and overfloeing with boxes filled with all my words and mostly poetry. has anyone got any suggestions, I'm 19 and have finished all my studies.

HISTORY INTRODUCTION, is is okay?

the essay question is: why did america get involved in vietnam in the 1950's?

heres my intro:

During the 1950’s Americas fear of communism had grown a great deal and this was the main reason why they got so involved in Vietnam. A communist state is a state where all citizens are equal and the state runs all industry. This frightened America because the thought of everyone having the same amount of money was ludicrous. The U.S was a place, which displayed the extremes; very rich people and very poor people. The rich people knew that if America became communist, then their money would be shared out amongst everyone.
