Standing Photos - Stand up straight, shoulders back and turn slightly, with your top half facing front. Try holding your arms out or put your hand on your hip, this will make your arms more slender looking. Putting one foot in front of the other is good too. Look at Red Carpet Photos and study the way they stand, it feels weird, but your pictures will look great.
Sitting photos - Same basically, flex your muscles, hold in your stomach, sit up straight.
Smiling - When you're smiling make sure you aren't showing too much of your gums, I tend to naturally have a gummy smile so I have to be really careful. Hold your head up and chin out, no double chins people.
Avoid Squinting - My brother is a photographer, he makes my friend close her eyes and he counts down when he gets to one she opens and he snaps, it's always gorgeous.

Don't smile so hard otherwise you end up seeming to squint. Also a small, knowing smile captivates people who look at the picture. Think of the Mona Lisa. Also, I don't know what kind of pictures you're talking about and what kind of camera and photographers but... if it are day time photos and you have a half way decent photographer with a half way decent camera, he/she should try and use natural light as much as possible or use constant light. The problem with flashes is they point straight into you're eys so you squint and they also very often give un-even light.

Relax, don't fear that flash. If it helps any, stare at a spot an inch or two above or below the camera, or at the lens itself.
Also, get to know your angles and the way light falls on your face. Practice your expressions in the mirror when you're doing your hair and/or makeup in the morning. Not only does it help you figure out how to look your best, it's fun and is a good confidence booster. That's how models do it. (just be wary of family poking fun at you if they catch you doing it. lol)

if you head is raised too much yoru eyes may look squinty if your head is lowered it makes your eyes bigger, maybe the tilt of your head is at the wrong angle.
also try turning your head at a slight angle left or right from the camera while slanting it up or down!! good luck and i hope this helps

I find that some people seem to smile way too hard. Then it looks like they are squinting. I would try not trying so hard.

Go about your normal habits. Pretend the camera is not there.
