I couldn't disagree more. Being more honest would change the world but for the better not for the worse.

Lying is a crutch for the feeble and the scared.

We live in a world where people's self-esteem has been shattered and living a lie has a lot to do with it. Every time you lie, you may think you are gaining an advantage but you are really just eroding your self esteem, eroding the values of a shared society and giving licence to others to lie.

Every time you tell a difficult lie, it may seem like it is hurting you but it is not. Being honest in the face of adversity is where self-esteem comes from and thats worth far more than the meagre harvest of the liar.

no, without lies, the world's social and political structure would not collapse, per say. the issue is not lying, its the lack of information. without information, the world would collapse. lies are merely a form of misinformation to prevent unnecessary pain or suffering, however it has been used wrongly to cover up important truths.

during the middle ages, very little information was available, however this changed during the renaissance, which saw the invention of the printing press. this invention caused the construction of news, which lead to the world being what it is today. the only major difference between now and 500 years ago is the amount of knowledge which is freely available to the modern person. whether the information being presented is true or false has no bearing on the impact of information.

this is best highlighted in what is still considered the defining moment of the past century, the moon landing. though roughly 50% of the American population believe it was entirely fabricated, the moon landing is still considered to be the largest single news item from the 20th century,

this also raises the question, what is the truth? is it what you as an individual believe? or is it what the entire general public believe? or is it somewhere in between? nothing in this world can ever be completely certain to everyone. this raises the question of how we can possibly identify what a lie is to a likely truth, or to a certain fabrication.

modern human space travel is based on the idea of man walking on the moon, but does that mean that anyone wanting to reenact this feat is wasting there time, because its never been done before?, or has the moon landing been a milestone in the quest of modern endeavors?

I imagine a few governments would collapse, or the officials in them, or something along that nature. A few organized religions may collapse as well.
I suppose the advertising business would take a few direct hits. There are also those who are con artists by nature, practically, who would be left with little to say and perhaps no way to make a living.
Casinos may be in trouble. The stock market is simply over my head in the lie/truth department. I might feel a pinch or two myself... I guess most people at least exaggerate a bit in their lives.
But I don't think the world would collapse, no. It would just wobble along in a different way. It would be interesting and require change and adjustments and all that... but earth itself would not give way. It's a hardy little planet, even with atmospheric changes and natural disasters, not to mention lies. It would not collapse.

And yes, there is a "jokes and riddles" category on Y!A, under "entertainment and____" (I forgot...). You'll find it. Have fun!

You have it backwards. A lie derives it power to deceive from the social contract that states contracts are to be honored and promises kept. In Kant's formulation, you cannot will that your lie should become universal since if everyone lied there could be no valid contracts. If you think a world where anarchy is the greatest good, and you dare not turn your back on any person is the ideal then accept your premise. I will have none, thank you.

The world as it currently is would collapse, because people do not appreciate honesty as much as they think they do. For example, your boss might SAY she appreciates honesty, but if you told her that she has bad breath and her ideas frequently have to be modified before being put into practice because they are just impractical, you would find that she doesn't appreciate honesty as much as she thought.

I think that we could, as a people, get to the point that we appreciate honesty, but it would take a great deal of humility, which seems to be in short supply lately.

Great question! Star for you!

This is so true. Think of all the times you've had to lie about something to save yourself. If we all had to be honest all the time, we wouldn't really be able to enjoy ourselves. When I was a teenager at a rocking party, I never would have had that fun if I HAD to tell the truth about where I was that night. Most things that are enjoyable are wrong in someone's eyes. Life without lies would be...boring.

Yes it's correct, because spying needs lying in order to save the world; if not the world will sure collapse.

Humans are way more adaptable than you realize. People can learn to handle the truth.

The lie is the excuse of the cowardly ones, although I prefer to say a lie that hurts, to say a truth that kills.
