The major publsihing houses have grown fewer; smaller presses are doing well, but very niched or regionalized; the hardback has given way to the soft cover in popularity; the internet has changed the market; and every writer needs an agent now.

What do you think is making things more difficult for writers to find success these days?

As a side question do you think finding success as a magazine writer lends itself to doing better in book writing?

OK- it has been said a few times in the books that you cannot "apperate" (appear and disappear) inside of Hogwarts or anywhere on the grounds.
They DO make a exception for Apperation classes, but otherwise it is not possible to do so. HOWEVER, in the Hospital ward, Harry Summons "kreatcher" and both he and Dobby INSTANTLY appear at his side with a loud pop. (this is when Harry wants Malfoy followed around).

How is this possible?? Are the house Elves allowed to do things that wizards are not (they can break the no-apperating spell withen Hogwarts). Did I miss somthing? I didn't cacth this the first time I read the book, but I saw this last night as I was rereading it. Is this a loophole in the story that got mistakenly written in??

He donated land in Santa Cruz, CA, which we now know as Harvey West Park...I just found out he also donated the land around Vikingsholm, which is a little castle at Lake Tahoe.

But I can't seem to find any more historical info about him. Anyone have any suggestions on where to find out more about this guy? It seems to me that he has a fairly significant role in the history of California, but I'm not finding anything...

Help!?!?!?

I recently purchased a folding fan, still in box, from a thrift store. The box itself has a sticker on the front and one on the side, but the characters are of an Oriental language. So, I can't read them. Once fully opened, the scene on the fan itself is of 2 koi-fish, or carp(I'm not sure which), and there is also what appears to be some kind of trademark stamped on it, with some characters written out next to it. The scene is beautifully done, whether printed on or painted. There are 19 ribs, including the wider ribs on either end, that look to be bamboo, and they are painted or varnished in a lovely dark color. I can't tell whether or not this is an authentic hand-crafted piece, or if it is just your run-of-the-mill mass-produced tourist souvenier. I'd love to know, whether or not it's authentic, and perhaps if it is, whether or not it's an antique. Thanks so much! :)
