Things may _seem_ more profound, but it's just an illusion. I tend to go the other way--I've used nootropics ("smart drugs"), and been pleased with the results. They don't work instantly like MJ, you take them daily and the effect builds up over a few weeks. In this respect they're closer to pharmaceuticals than to street drugs. Also, the effect is purely mental; there is no emotional component to it. Nootropics don't make you feel better, they make you think better.
The effects vary depending on which ones you take. Some people take nootropics as a memory booster, but I haven't noticed much effect there, maybe because I've always been a bit absent-minded. For me, the main effects have been a noticeable increase in the depth of my thinking, and an increased ability to see the "big picture". This was with piracetam, choline & gingko biloba.
Nootropics are not recreational drugs--as I stated, they don't have an emotional effect--but if you're really looking to increase your, um...profundity, then you may want to do some research on them.

Things were not really 'more profound', they were clearer; and it seemed like everything was under a microscope. Everything would come into focus.
Time slowed down, and my thoughts were more manageable.
It's just a different perspective from the everyday view of reality. Sometimes it would really help me solve problems; i could look at them from a different angle. Different than the ones i had previously employed. It was just an overall freeing from an everyday reality.

More profound? I think that many of the restrictions that our minds have in the day to day order of things can change and allow our minds to open up a little more.
For me, it is more a case of being to concentrate on one subject at a time rather than having a lateral thought race on every subject.
I believe that I have talked myself into agreeing with you although I don't think we are being more profound, rather we are thinking with less restrictions. Without being stoned and if we could remove those restrictions, I think our thoughts would be the same.
But lets not look for the difficult way.....smoke more dope!

Things are not profound. It is your mind that becomes more profound. Lets just say that certain substances make sparks in different parts of your brain. If you are getting stoned, then you are sparking dead brain cells. If you are getting stimulated, then the world is an open book............................

Yes, things are more profound, as the right side of your brain is in control. Just don't try linear thinking!!

the problem is that it's very hard to, so to speak, bring that profundity back with you into the un-stoned world.....it's like leading eurydice back from the underworld, it takes an enormous amount of care to make sure that the subtle resonance of the stoned world isn't immediately dissipated by the clamour of everyday life. i know very people who have succeeding in retaining their experience once they're sober. maybe this is its beauty, but it's also part of its bittersweetness.

No - I found things slowed down - which can make them more tangible because you are only trying to wrap your head around part of a puzzle instead of a whole puzzle.

Yes, because it helps you slow down and think, and also to look at things from different angles. I think it improves empathy somehow.
