mu (loose translation, the question has no answer as asked e.g. What color is the invisible horse?). Perhaps the mind has no purpose? The mind is. To imbue it with an importance that it hasn't attained, is like venerating your appendix, only it has much more dire consequences.
Mastery of life itself probably exist in a state of Mushin. (see link)

"The mind is not for thinking, the mind is for receiving thought".
You are the life of the body, the body is your space vehicle, without it you could not function in this environment.
The mind is your ships computer
Your computer projects your universe and circumstances in life, according to the choices you make in Thought, Desire, and Action. Similar to the star trek holodeck.
God is the real thinker. When you get things mucked up and give up your efforts to "Will" then you can step aside and God "will" run your life.

The Human Mind is the center of your reality that in turn houses your Spirit called the Spirit of man. It is like a Flight recorder that records everything you have done and not done in life.
It is the essence of your personality and Character.
(Pro 20:27) The spirit of man [is] the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
(Ecc 3:21) Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
(Isa 66:2) For all those [things] hath mine hand made, and all those [things] have been, saith the LORD: but to this [man] will I look, [even] to [him that is] poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
( Job 32:8) But [there is] a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.
It is best to become wise and understand God Fear God and Obey God for he can not only take life away but he can take it forever.
However, such are the rewards of obedience man cannot even begin to imagine.

Its essentially storing sensory input for survival. Thus it is overactive defensively. It is our job to "observe" what we've stored by noting repeated experiences in reality that we do not like. Noting the feeling associated with the repetition and tracking it back to the source and error. Changing our mind changes our experience of reality.
