Arts & Humanities - 14 March 2007

I want to do a painting of a jet fighter and need to know how to get that gull gray paint scheme that most of the jets have.

I haven't decided what type of paints I will use so it doesn't matter if someone knows a mix for acrylics or watercolors or anything else.

Some people can decorate a room or dress in a way that has an undefinable quality that tends to be called 'good taste'. What is the essence of good taste? Is it cross-cultural? Some 'looks' are just fashions, but some others seem to transcend eras, and become classics. Can good taste be learnt, or is it a trait of personality? What's your definition?

Hi, I have an audition coming up for a DaDA award to study Musical Theatre. Everyone I am up against is in the same position as me - they have the ability to be accepted to the college (out of hundreds) but cannot afford the £30,000 fees to go with it. How do I show that I'm different and worth the college investing this amount of money in me? Would you recommend doing the pieces I did orginally as they got me in in the first place or changing as I don't want them to think these are the only pieces I can do?! Help!!!

I was just reading F R Leavis's Mass Civilisation and Minority Culture and thinking how annoyingly elitist it is and I wonder if anyone else feels that culture now seems to exist in extremes? People are either elitist culture vultures who listening to nothing but classical music, read nothing but foreign books in translation and basically go for anything that is guarenteed not to have a wide audience or they are watchers of Big Brother, readers of The Da Vinci Code and listeners of whatever everyone else seems to be listening to. There seems to be very few people in the middle. What does anyone else think?

I've been asked by an author to make ten illustrations for a book he is writing. The subject matter is rather obscure, so it will have limited printing and circulation. I have to provide a quote for my work. I am not a professional illustrator, and this will be the first time my drawings are printed. They will be 10 black and white line drawings. The writer has seen samples of my work and I'm confident he'll be satisfied with what I produce. What should I charge?

My grandpa came over from Hungary during the start of the first unsuccessful Hungarian revolution. Recently my dad was telling me about the Russians control over Hungary and other countrys and how cruel the Soviets treated them and the concentration camps. My great grandpa also died in a concentration camp. I was just wondering is there a reason why America helped out the jews and helped get rid of Hitler but they couldn't bother to help the other countries like Hungary. Especially after Hungary asked for Americas help? Please help me understand!
