nimisha- please open your history books and read that greece not only once but twice won against the persians ,should you not like books , then check out persian- greco wars in the internet. I asked a hypothetical question to a historical event - you sure you'r up to this?

We would be living in an entirely different world, on based on Persian culture rather than Greek. Would the civilisation of Rome arisen or would the Persians have gone on to conquer further west? Would we all be Zoroastrians now? The Persians would probably have been more interested in the Eastern Mediterranean, than the Western. This leads to the interesting hypothesis that they would have had no arguments with the Phoenicians/Carthaginians (who after all, provided ships for them). The Carthaginian Empire might have grown rather than the Roman and we could all be speaking with Farsi and Punic derived words rather than Greek or Latin. One thing is certain, however. Either or both Empires would have faced the same Germanic tribes as the Romans did, and probably would have eventually been overcome by them. And the history of the world for the last 2000 years would now be much the same. Except - the Carthaginians were great sailors. They were trading with Britain long before the Romand Conquest. What if - they had sailed the Atlantic....

With all the due respects, the Spartans LOST against the Persians. They just delayed the inevitable and this is the world as we know.

Folks, be fair. The question was about Spartans and I answered in that sense. The 300 is about the battle at Thermopylae, which the Spartans lost. Xerxes went to take Athens, however brief the stay may be and it was the Greek alliance that routed Xerxes. I guess you are confusing the Greeks with Spartans (Though Spartans are Greeks) and Spartans did things for their own glory, especially military glory. Those interested in history would know of this message "Alexander son of Philip, and the Greeks - except the Spartans - from the barbarians living in Asia"

After the Battle of Leuctra the voice of Sparta was never heard. That was in 371 BC and that was the end of the Hegemony. Just 75 years of military glory, that was all Sparta was. And that was what I intended in my answer, Spartans just delayed the inevitable. The fate of the world was never defined by Sparta. Greeks maybe, but not Spartan Greeks.

I have nothing against the Spartans, as a matter of fact, if I were a man, I'd have loved dying for Leonidas in Thermopylae.

Now, had I missed something? Any sites that you can suggest for further reading...

i second the notion that nimisha open her history books!.
in all fairness.. its hard to say what would have happened even if the persian had defeated the greeks. I believe this was only a punitative exhibition.. they would have destroyed athens (who didn;t at that time) killed a few people and maybe the greek city states would have had to pay tribute to Persia..it is unlikely however that direct persian rule would have been placed over greece.... i think there woudl not have been much of a difference...
but do not tell my family about this..i am greek.. they would disown me

The Greeks are responsible for the way that our modern Western civilization is today. They brought us Government,
Arts, Culture, Politics, Mathmatics, just to name a few. If the spartans had been defeated, the World would still look like the middle east BC.
