I want to do a painting of a jet fighter and need to know how to get that gull gray paint scheme that most of the jets have.

I haven't decided what type of paints I will use so it doesn't matter if someone knows a mix for acrylics or watercolors or anything else.

Thanks!

I mix by sight, but if you are planning on using store bought black use a tad of cobolt blue with it and I do mean just a touch and then add the white till you get the shade you want. The blue is just to take the harshness out of the gray you will get by just mixing the black and white, not to give it a blue cast, so just use a minute amount.

You can also mix complimentary colors (blue and orange, purple and yellow, or red and green) Purple and yellow may be the best bet with the gray you arre wanting. you will have to add white to them to see the true color you are getting and get the right shade, but with experimentation you can get it.

Try mixing two complementary colours together to get a nice gray colour. I would suggest yellow and purple, that makes a nice gray... then you can add more yellow on the sunlit edge, and more purple on the shadow side for a very realistic look.

Black plus white just make a flat gray with no life in it. Another good gray is made with orange and blue... green and red are both so dark that mixture is closer to black.

To achieve the exact color of gray that you want, start with a 'gob' of white and add one pin-point of black at a time until you achieve the lightest color you want, and then paint that on along the white area, then add a tiny bit more black and meld that into the gray you first applied, then mix in a tiny bit more black - etc until you work up to 'black' - always brushing the newer, darker grayed-white into gray, dark gray to black.
