FYI, I'm an American. The first family from India I met had the surname "Gupta." Since then, I've met a lot of Guptas, several Chopras and quite a few Ganeshes.

I've read the Wikipedia entry for Indian names (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_name) so there's no need to cite it or explain to me how surnames are formed, used or not used.

What I'm wondering about is what that article doesn't explain: The prevalence (or lack) of surnames (last names) in India, which are most common, and [if possible] the meanings of the most common surnames, if appropriate.

Thanks in advance! I always pick a best answer, so this is a sure 10 points for the person with the best answer.

During Polk's presidency and the 54'40 or Fight business, why exactly did the US want Oregon? Did it have a good fur trading industry? Was there some economic gain there? Was there some danger to national security if they didn't get it?

Not to insult believers or say that agnostics and atheists can't feel good about life.

But this is the general conclusion I've reached after much thought and debate on how people explain their existence. Faith usually boils down to people explaining life in a way that is appealing to them, thus making sense according to the pleasure principle. While atheists and agnostics usually seek to explain life scientifically, seeking explanations that can be proven or tested with solid methods and logic, thus making sense according the reality principle.

Simply put: For believers, feeling good makes sense. For, non-believers, making sense feels good. In my experience, that seems to be the main divide between these two ways of thought.

What do you think?

Alive

Oh pitiful bird,
Whatever did happen to you?
Your feathers are unfair and jagged,
Your frame and limbs are void of life,
And your eyes are burdened with strife.
Whatever did happen to you,
Oh pitiful bird?

Did the others around you,
Surpass you in glamour and beauty?
Did they take flight and soar higher?
Did they adventure from place to place,
And did not faintly faint or tire?
Did their reaching wings embrace,
The adventurous winds with grace?
Did they hold steadfast,
With the strong blows they faced?
Were they of the same feathers,
But you were a different case?

Among loved ones,
In their presence,
Before their countenance,
Did you see the lack of your beauty,
As they had what you lacked in plenty?
And though they saw the lack you possessed,
They couldn’t help to meet such lack,
Because with beauty, they were blessed,
It wasn’t given nor did they buy such feature.
What did you do to be an unblessed creature?

Oh, how you loved your loved ones,
And enjoyed the time spent with each one.
But among them, your lack was evident.
Did the pain become overwhelming?
Did your voice crack nearing in tears?
Did your eyes manifest your heartbreak?
Did you try to stay, smile, and play a fake?
Did you fly away in your sorrow,
Hoping the pain would fade by tomorrow?
Did the increasing pain remain
Day after day?
Did your heart keep heavy,
And your tears made way?

But what mortal could you blame,
For your dwarfed and scanty frame?
In your somber and lonely circumstance,
There is no mortal in guilt.
No, not one is at fault.
Ill-favored, you were built,
And in your loathsome countenance,
You heart began to wilt.

For your runty wings couldn’t bear,
Your fawning sorrow and make fly.
Nor could you have lived without a care,
With such painful truth to deny.

You lay there upon the cold ground,
With your wings heavy and stiff,
Your beak is extinct of any sound,
It seems with you, death has had enough.

For you heart is desolate of any beat,
You chest is flat and barren of air,
Neglected, you lay in defeat,
And your eyes carry a lonely stare.

Your limbs are lifeless,
Your countenance has no hue,
And your body is as of wood.
Months, years, and people have past you,
They all came and just stood.

The months came, but turned to years.
They aged you, making a new day.
The people stood, shed a few tears,
And they also went their way.

Oh pitiful bird,
Did you take your own life?
Or, because of ones around you,
Did you lose you life?

A Lover Not Loved

Will I forever love, but never be loved?
Will I always desire, but never be thought of?

Will I forever cherish with my whole heart,
But never receive just one heart beat?

Will my passion forever burn,
But never find a beauty to quench it?

Will I always be at the footsteps of one’s door,
But never have one consider my existence?

Will I forever shed tears of desire, passion and sorrow,
But never see one’s desire last through a tomorrow?

Will my heart forever dwell on her beauty,
But never come near to her heart?

Will my lips embrace and sing her name,
But never hear her lips utter mine?

Will I always have sleepless nights,
But never have a minute of her time?

Will I forever find joy in her eyes,
But never see a smile to my heart?

Will I forever enjoy her presence,
But never be noticed by her eyes?

Will I forever be the romantic,
Who will never find romance?

Will I forever be the dreamer,
Who will never see a dream come true?

Will I forever be the ocean,
With no shore to speak to?

Will I forever be the optimistic,
Who will never find a sign of hope?

Will I forever be the lonely one,
Who will live with his tears and cope?

Will I forever be the voyager,
Who will wonder and never find a harbor?

Answer me just this one question, oh God,
Will I forever be a lover that will never be loved?

Does anyone else disregard the assumption/theorem/concept that everyone on Earth is either an Aristolian or a Platonist? If so, why or why not..? I can't be the only one who knows who these people are, what they stood for, and what their differences were.
