I am considering building a roof terrace on top of my kitchen extention, which is a flat roof construction, approximately 2.5M by 3.5M.

I am aware that in order to do this, I need to be able to demonstrate to the local council planning department that the construction will be strong enough to carry the additional load of people & garden furniture on the roof.

1. What is the weight that I need to allow for (presumably based on the maximum number of people that could be assumed to be on the roof at any one time)

2. How do I calculate whether the existing joists and board are strong enough?

Existing joists run across the shortest run, and are 150mm x 55mm spaced approx 35cm intervals.

Roof board is particle contruction, however as the current felt roof has deteriorated and is now leaking I am planning to replace the boards with marine ply roofing board (18mm?)

Any comments / advice appreciated.

There's this boy at school,a year older than me (around 16) and he plays the violin. He's real great,he wants to go abroad to study music and i think he has great potential.
But the kids at school pick on him and laugh at him because he is not popular, gorgeous and stuff
I am the school's flag-holder( this is the best student at school) and I'm also popular. So,because i look up to him a lot,I play the piano and know how much it takes to become what he is,i went up to him and told him how much i admire him and that he should invite me to one of his music school's concerts. Not meaning that i fancy him or anything.
And when the....morons saw it, they started hanging out with him and making him a friend too.Is this bad?D u think he feels that people accept him just because of me???

In the hospital the relatives gathered in the waiting room, where their family member lay gravely ill.

Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and somber. 'I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news,' he said as he surveyed the worried faces. 'The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, semi-risky and you will have to pay for the brain yourselves.'

The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a great length of time, someone asked, 'Well, how much does a brain cost?'

The Doctor quickly responded, '$25,000 for a male brain, and $3,000 for a female brain.'

The moment turned awkward. Men in the room tried not to smile, avoiding eye contact with the women, but some actually smirked. A man, unable to control his curiosity, blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, 'Why is the male brain so much more?'

The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and said to the entire group, 'It's just standard pricing procedure. We have to mark down the price of the female brains, because they've actually been used.'

We have two cats. Both are indoors 100% of the time. Thus, they are not exposed to other animals. I feel like it's probably got a cold and the eye will clear up over time. Or, maybe it wrestled the other cat and got it scratched. The only thing with that is they are declawed and there are no signs of a scratch per se. I'm apprehensive of taking him to the vet unless it might be something bad. I know that sounds wierd, but since they don't ever leave the house, they are pretty safe from other stuff they could very likely get at the vet, i.e. fleas or some infectious disease. Just looking for feedback to help me decide what to do. Thanks.

i'm going to India next week and i often have trouble with a build-up of wax in my ears. i'm worried about it being a problem when we get on the plane. I've tried Otex and Audiclean, also Olive Oil and cotton buds- nothing seems to have worked overly well. I've had my ears syringed by the nurse, and that worked... for three days. Please, someone help me.

If you go outside in the middle of the night, it's dead silent...no birds anywhere. But if you go outside in the middle of the day, there's tons of birds singing!

And don't say "It's because they're sleeping," cause that's BS!! Yea, maybe SOME of them are sleeping, but I'm sure there are some birds who are 'night owls' and don't like sleeping at night!!

I try to do a key-combination, like Alt-C, and a window pops up that says
"Code execution has been interrupted" and has choices like Continue, End, Debug, Help. What do I do? Can I fix this, or do I have to replace "normal.doc" with a backup copy?

when i go with my wife to her church she gets mad if I don't generflex and kneel at the right time..of course I don't take communioin as this would be wrong..but can't I just sit there instead of all that kneeling and generflexing and I don't even know how to cross myself as we don't do that in the Lutheran Church.
I told my wife that i was not raised that way but i respect her faith.
well she does not have to do anything when she goes to my church not even confession..i told her she was being unfair..right?
any opinions?

At one time, the Canadian and US dollars were discounted by 10 cents on each side of the border (i.e., a Canadian dollar was worth 90 US cents in the US, and a US dollar was worth 90 Canadian cents in Canada). A man walks into a bar on the US side of the border, orders 10 US cents worth of beer, pays with a US dollar and receives a Canadian dollar in change. He then walks across the border to Canada, orders 10 Canadian cents worth of beer, pays with a Canadian dollar and receives a US dollar in change. He continues this throughout the day, and ends up dead drunk with the original dollar in his pocket.

Who pays for the drinks?

Mr. Jones is traveling with his wife and mother-in-law in a far east country. At a place of honor his mother-in-law makes a careless remark, which the native people take as an insult to the royal family.

Mr. Jones is dragged off to court with his wife and mother-in-law and are sentenced to corporal punishment. Each of them are to receive 50 lashes on the rear end with a cane. But because the royal family doesn't want to appear hostile to foreigners, they grant the guests in their country a wish beforehand, as long as it is able to be fulfilled.

Mrs. Jones is first.

"What do you wish for yourself?"

"I would like a pillow bound on my rear end before the lashings."

"Okay, that shall be granted to you."

Mrs. Jones has the pillow bound to her rear end and receives her punishment. But because the pillow is too small and the executioner also hits her back a couple of times, she receives a few blows.

Next it is Mr. Jones' mother-in-law's turn.

"What do you wish for yourself?"

"I would like a pillow bound on my rear end and a pillow bound on my back before the lashings."

"Okay, that shall be granted to you."

The mother-in-law receives her fifty lashes, but hardly feels the pain through the pillows.

Then comes Mr. Jones himself.

"What do you wish for yourself?"

"I have two wishes. Do you want to fulfill them for me?"

"Because you are a guest in our country, we want to fulfill your wishes for you, as long as they are reasonable."

"I would like 100 lashes instead of 50."

The executioner is surprised, but recovers again right away and replies, "Yes, that is a pious wish, it shall be granted to you. And what is your second wish?"

"I would like to have my mother-in-law bound to my back."

i get nose bleeds often, especailly in the winter. i have since i was a child, but they're more frequent now. it's not just a light nose bleed either. sometimes they last about a half an hour!! i'm a college freshman, and i was wondering if maybe stress could be a cause, or lack of sleep. and how do i get rid of them? my dorm room is very warm, and humid, compared to others and the air outside, so i don't beleive that is it, i get plenty of water every day, and i have no allergies. i usually get them after sneezing a few times, or if my nose is stuffy when i wake up, or get bakc from walking to and from classes. is there a serious health problem here? i had blood work done in the summer before i came, so i think a disese would have shown up, but i'm worried. i get one at least once a week, sometimes more, and they alst a while too!! i've heard they can cauterize the inside of your nose, but i'd prefer not to do that. any other suggestions?
