Actually, yes. A lot of your answerers here have good intentions, but they are still thinking of the old way of farming that consists of Farmer Joe milking his Betsy.

Today, cows are forced into constant pregnancy. The second their babies are born, they are ripped away, chained down to the floor so they are unable to move, and fed a diet that consists of pureed cow meat (among other stuff.) We keep all the milk for ourselves, giving none to the cows' babies. A few weeks after they are born, these babies will be sent to slaughter to make veal... never having walked, known their mothers, and oftentimes, never having seen sunlight.

Aside from the emotional trauma, the milking cows are physically tortured as well, having so many hormones and chemicals to ensure they are constantly able to milk, that their utters are horribly enlarged. They are so huge and constantly milked that the cows live in constant pain. When they can no longer produce the proper amount of milk, they are sent to the slaughter house to make steaks.

Sorry to be graphic, but you asked.

Are there really this many people in the world who have no idea that a cow ONLY produces milk in order to feed a calf.
Those people who say that they are pumped full of stuff to make them lactate, or that milking them makes them produce more, seem to have not the slightest idea about biology.
Do you think that women lactate when they have not just given birth?! Of course they don't. Females of all lactating species produce milk specifically and only to feed their young. That is why the dairy industry has to keep all dairy cows pregnant. The minute they've given birth (as has already been said) the calf is ripped away from them, either killed if male, or added to the dairy industry if female, and the milk which was intended for the calf is then sucked out, bottled and sold to the wrong species!
It is true that if a lactating cow is not milked, her udders become painful and swollen etc, but she doesn't get like that all on her own! Her udders are full of milk because the dairy farmer keeps her pregnant to produce more milk.
And an awful lot of cows still have painful, swollen udders even when milked. It's not done as often as a calf would suckle, which is why so many cows have mastitis (an infection of the bladder). One of the signs of this is pus in the milk - yup, pus! And that pus comes out with the milk and into the bottles. It's not changed by pasteurisation or anything else. It's in the bottle, then it's in your stomach.

This is a very controversial subject so I wont get too deep into it but I do have a comment that helps lead into what we should assume when using animals for our nutritional purposes. We, out of all living creatures that I am aware of, are the only ones who drink the milk of another species. It makes me question it only because we have our own milk for nourishment so it seems plain to me that we should drink what we produce and let the animals drink what they produce. I am not an animal rights activist and neither am I an individual who holds extreme views on eating meat or drinking milk or hunting or anything of that sort. However, I do like to think for myself and consider the reasons why we as a society choose to make certain choices. Simply so I can base my decisions on facts and not solely on tradition.

I wasn't going to answer this one because Lilliyan gave the best answer. I just had to respond to the girl who said Horizon doesn't support veal.

Who told you that big fat LIE?? Horizon isn't even true organic milk. Horizon is one of the LOWEST on the rating sheet of organic milks.

Going organic means no steroids or antibiotics. These cows STILL need to be continually impregnated. Male calves go to slaughter. Females are enslaved to our love of cheese.

America is the only nation that consumes milk this way. We are THE most ill nations on this planet. The average American consumes almost 600 pounds of dairy a year. There are 10 cows out there supporting your addiction. It takes 100 pounds of grain a day to support a cow. That's 1000 pounds a day of grain wasted just for you.

So yes, to answer the questioner, we are depriving calves of their mother's milk.

We are also starving villages in third world countries. During the famine in Ethiopia - their nation STILL sent us their grain for out cows rather than feeding their own people.

Disgusting.

To the people who claim cows need to be milked - that is just not true. In NATURE, a cow's calf would consume it's mother's milk. As the calf needs less, the mother produces less. Until she dries up.

This unnatural way of constantly pumping cows for their milk causes great distress to their udders. Which means you get a glass that is not just milk but pus from their injuries.

Well the babies still get milk, but the conditions some cows are kept in is appalling which also means the cow isnt healthy so the milk isnt healthy. Also despite popular belief, dairy isnt actually very good for you, its for baby cows not humans.

I used to be vegetarian a few years ago, here is my view point on this. I think it is incredibly obscure that we drink other animals milk and eat eggs. What person though hmm I'm gonna try this thing that came out of that chickens butt. Odd. Very Odd.

By drinking milk, you really aren't depriving the baby animals of milk you are however supporting the veal industry. Most milk companies artificial impregnant cows constantly, then use their babies for veal. In turn the cows continuely produce extra milk that people consum.

If you choose to drink organic milk, such as horizons you are not supporting the veal industry. I choose Horizons not only because even though I am no longer vegetarian I am completely against veal, but in addition organic milk has a longer shelf life, it last for roughly a month!

The more you milk, the more milk is produced, so I guess there should be enough for everybody. In fact cows will start releasing milk even before the baby is born and after it is weaned.

It taste so good though. And don't forget we are the apex of the food chain so we can eat or drink anything we want. Any other animal would drink human milk if they had the means to be the apex.
