I have a pair of black collared lovebirds, bred in Bavaria and great fun! Two days ago however, I noticed that one has a tiny hole in her beak, about 2-3mm in diameter, at the base of her beak, near her nostril. It's not clear if it is growing bigger yet.. but I will keep an eye on it. There doesn't appear to be any swelling.
Otherwise Matilda is very healthy: smooth plumage, full of energy, bright, clear eyes and acting perfectly normally. She is fed on seeds, fruit and veg and has a mineral block.
I doubt her partner caused this injury. They do have the odd tiff, they are generally a very peacful pair, and in any case Matilda is the dominant bird - I would be very surprised if her partner had dared to bite her!
I would like to know what caused the hole, what the signs of infection are, and whether I need to do something about it, or if it will just grow out. I don't want to be paranoid and drive 150miles to our avian vet to find out it is nothing!
