My desktop has completely died - on startup, it makes noises but I don't even get the BIOS info up, the screen is completely blank.
First of all, am I right to think this is probably down to the failure of something fundamental (BIOS, CPU, memory etc)?
Secondly, what are the chances this might have been caused by a virus? I had problems with a virus a few months ago which reformatted my hard drive (despite the fact I was running Norton!), but is it possible for a virus to cause this severe a problem?
Thirdly, I'm buying a new computer: how can I get at the data on my old hard drive? [I'm assuming that isn't what's failed because I don't even get to that point in the startup]. Is it possible just to take it out and install it into my new machine as a slave? Could that bring any viruses with it? Or am I better spending c.£100 on getting a professional to do it?
All I really want are my photos, e-mails and Excel/Word files since my last backup 3 weeks ago.
