It is my understanding that many historians do not subscribe to the "Great Man" theory of history--that is that individuals can change the course of history. Rather, they believe, historical currents carry society along to through the changes that occur. Having said that, there are a number of people who seem to have helped change history. Some of these include: Plato and Aristotle, St. Paul, Isaac Newton, Abraham Lincoln, and Albert Einstein.

I would say Hitler. He tried to destroy a how race of people actually two races Gypsies and the Jewish People. His armies managed to destroy most of Europe. He ended the Depression that hit the world during the 1930's by causing a war that needed machines, guns and bullets to fight so workers were needed in the defense plants to build these items. His armies killed a lot of people including a lot of Germans. In the end, he help created the country of Israel forcing the Jewish people to move to the middle east since the Holocaust was the icing on the cake of many years of prosecution that they faced in Europe. Hitler cause the cold war by causing his homeland Germany to be divided up and caused a lot of Eastern European countries to be gobble up by the Soviet Union during the next 50 years. So I would say Adolf Hitler was the most powerful person after Jesus Christ to change the world. Oh yes Hitler is thought of as Savior of those who have Anti-Semantic views and he still has followers all over the world to this day.

Maybe Mahatma Gandhi. He showed us the power of non-violent resistance. Then Martin Luther King Jr. used that technique to change racial relations in America. We still have a lot of violence in this world, but slowly and slowly, little by little, the non-violent approach to world relations is catching on.

Or maybe the founding fathers of the USA. Until then there was no democracy in the world since ancient Greece and the Roman Republic. The USA was a daring experiment, but most countries of the world have followed suit, for the betterment of civilization.

Have you ever heard of "the butterfly effect"? (And I don't mean the movie.)

Everyone changes the course of history. If you vote, you change the course of history. If you make a baby and that baby's great-grandson invents a flying vacuum cleaner, you changed history. Etc.
