My husband and I are thinking about moving out of the state of Michigan when I receive my degree. The field that I’m studying is accounting. Michigan economy is not doing all that well. But I’m afraid to make such a move without doing the proper homework. We are considering Chicago, IL.

I know people go out and listen to music and I've heard you can camp there. I've got friends who would like to do this but it's listed as "primitive camping" so I'm assuming that means no facilities. Are there port-a-potties or any public restrooms? Also, do people do this during the week or mostly on weekends. Thanks.

I'm gonna be living in Austin, TX in a month - moving from The Bronx, NY - and I'm wondering what some good restaurants are in terms of service, price, and tasty delights. I know there's a chinatown there and I'm definitely gonna miss the NY chinatown's food. So, anybody have any input on the cheap but tasty?

We are considering a move to Austin from Charleston, S.C. and wanted a comparison of the two climates from someone who has seen both. We love all that the city of Austin has to offer culturally, but are a little concerned about the heat index there.

Two of the main reasons we are leaving Charleston are:

1. The heat index in the summer

2. The crazy amount of mosquitos

Can anyone in Austin offer a description of how the weather there compares to Charleston, S.C. or a comparable low country climate? Any problems there with mosquitos and no see-ums (biting nats- horrible in Charleston!)? I've not been able to find a comparison chart of heat indices for cities. Plenty of temperature data, but that doesn't truly describe the 'feeling' of the local climate when humidity is factored in.

Thanks,

I'm considering Portland for college, and I've been told that Portland is an Austin minus ten years. I love Austin, and would like to go someplace with the same kind of vibe. (live music, cool people)
So how do they compare?
Or if you don't know Austin, what's Portland like?

Reading some of the answers in regard to austin TX I saw someone wrote bad traffic. I am wondering if they can compare it to So Ca. traffic?
Does a couple in their late 40's fit the mix and one last thing. How bad is the humidity?? Does it compare to Atlanta or Maui? So Ca. as little to no humidity so I am going from that stand point.
Thank you.

I just got off the phone with someone residing in Austin.
She seemed like she was pretty much oblivious to the fact that Texas does indeed have earthquakes. Apparently she and her other coworkers think Texas is somehow immune to earthquakes and they just happen elsewhere.

I seen some show on TV relating to weather patterns by state.
Texas has the most prolific weather patterns, just because it is a BIG state. Earthquakes, Floods, Fires, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, etc. The most extreme weather than any other state.

Anybody who still does not believe Earthquakes happen in Texas can read the following.
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/states/texas/history.php

I just hope others that live in Austin are not as oblivious to that fact.

But what I am wondering is this...I have no one there, I will be moving by myself, and am wondering about crime rates, etc. I have checked out rents they are not too bad. I know I need a car. But is it safe for a single woman?

I've applied to Rosemont at Hidden Creek apartments, is this a good apartment complex? A good area to live in for a single mom of 3? I hear a lot of talk about crime, what type of crime is going on? I live in Buffalo,NY and Murder is the top crime here, so I don't want to jump from the fire to the frying pan. Can anyone give me some advice on the overall reputation of Austin?
