My boyfriend and I are thinking about visiting for a long weekend to determine if we would maybe want to move there. We've heard lots of great things about Austin and I'm anxious to hear more. Any additional info would be great (job market, recreation, weather etc). Thanks everyone!

I've lived in the Austin area for almost 20 of my 23 years on this planet. (This is a typical Austinite answer too ... we "Keep Austin Weird")
Some great things to do would include going walking downtown and/or through Zilker Park on a nice afternoon, view the city from Mt.Bonnell, go shopping on Congress and have brunch at Trudy's North Star (they have a buffet - get the waffles - the pecan butter is awesome!). It really depends on what kind of things you like to do. There's a lot of great places to eat around town.
The weather is fantastic - because if you don't like it, it'll change by tomorrow. :D In one week, we had ice on the roads and temps so high that people wore shorts.
The job market depends on what kind of job you're looking for ...

We're not ALL based around 6th St. There's a bunch of other things to do if that doesn't suit you. Oh, and we're the live music capitol - so taking in a music show is always a recommendation. There's so many different venues and artists here - so you can find something no matter what kind of music you like.
I have my account set-up to allow user emails, so if you'd like a list of things to do based on more information about your personality, I can give it to you.

I live in Austin, and it's one of the best places to live in the U.S. The job market here is good for white collar and service industry people, but it is competitive. The climate is hard to beat, although hot for a few months in the summer. For night life, the younger crowd loves 6th Street. There are a ton of live music venues and restaurant's in the area. Also in the downtown area is The Paramount Theatre, which is a beautifully restored landmark that has great live shows and vintage movies. The State Capitol is just up the street from there. If you like Country & Western, or you want a really unique and autentic Texas experience, check out The Broken Spoke. I promise it will be memorable. For some exercise try the Town Lake Hike & Bike Trail, also near downtown. If its hot, cool off at Barton Springs Pool, one of the largest pools of its kind in the world. It wouldn't be a trip to Austin without checking out some Tex-Mex. I like Maudies, for their enchaladas, on Lake Austin Blvd or Matt's El Rancho on South Lamar for a good all 'round menu. If you have a car you might drive out to the Oasis on Lake Travis for a sunset Magarita. The veiw is spectacular. If you are not from Texas, you will be pleasantly surprised with how friendly people are here. Have fun on your visit and I hope you decide to stay.

Ask the locals when you get there. Stay at a hotel downtown or near and you are pretty much in the hub of people who know what's happening and where to go for food, music and sights that are all over the city. If you like to take walks or jog, with or without a dog, check out Mueller park for trails, ducks, throw back fishing, picnic areas, shopping and a children's museum right near the heart of downtown. Great for yourself and any children you bring with you.

I don't live in Austin, but I travel from DFW to Austin on a regular basis to visit my dad. Or at least, that is my excuse. The real reason I go to Austin is to catch Monte Montgomery live. He is a local guitar hero in Austin, and his shows are the most amazing shows I've ever been to. http://gigsup.com/scheddisp.php?setID=16 That is the link for his tour dates. He plays in Austin alot, and you will be glad you went to see him.

For a gay bar look into Rainbow farm animals Co on 5th highway. And for in basic terms cool **** look into Pete's Dueling Piano Bar and Nuno's on 6th. Nuno's is a superb blues bar. All i'd extremely propose is in basic terms walking around downtown on 6th highway and hop in and out of places till you come across something you extremely like
