Austin is a great town. Lots of stuff to do outside. If you are of a liberal bent, you will love it there. Like most state capitals and college towns, it leans a little to the left. Try Zilker park and Barton Springs out. There are several nice lakes in the area. The Greenbelt is a great place for running, walking, or mountain biking.

Hook em Horns! You will be a longhorn fan whether you like it or not!
Best radio stations, they have tons of variety. The other day I heard Kanye West, then Violent Femmes, then Hank Williams Sr, then a swamp pop zydeco jam. OMG I love the radio here!
Worst drivers of anywhere - worse than NY, LA, anywhere. Bad. They go 20mph under the speed limit then when you pass em they speed up to go even w/ the car in front of you. This happens to me all the time, I don't get it. It is the worst thing about it here...
Austin smells GREAT like fresh air and town lake and the hills. Lots of good hiking and biking and fine healthy people.
There's parts of town for hippies, yuppies, students, politicians - and they all happily enjoy each other's hoods. It's a great town. Very friendly and everyone likes to smile and be having fun and enjoying the town.
When you get here check out www.meetup.com to meet some locals, like the Discovering Austin group is fun when you're new...

In my opinion Austin, TX is an okay city to live in. I am originally from Houston but now live in Austin to attend college. Here is my list of pros and cons that stand out in my opinion.
PROS:
lots of places available for outdoor activities (there are many lakes, trails, springs, parks, etc)
good music selection (it is the live music capital of the world)
University of Texas and its sports (make up for the lack of professional teams)
CONS:
traffic (there is always traffic on I-35 and I mean always, I'm from Houston and the traffic in Houston doesn't annoy me as much as the Austin traffic. Most of the blame can be put on their silly 3 lane freeways)
limited entertainment (if you like to go bars or clubs, the only place you can really go is downtown, there are, obviously, other bars and clubs around town but there are spread out, Austin also does not have as many museums or tourist attractions that many cities have)

I travel a lot for my job, I have worked in Hawaii, California, Germany, Texas, all over, and Austin Texas is by far the best place I have been, It is a very laid back city, you will find all types in Austin. from party scenes, to hiking, lakes, hills, culture, it has it all. every place has pros and cons, but I can say this about Austin Tx, it has more pros than cons, enjoy everything it has to offer. good luck with your move.

great weather, beautiful landscap, wonderful restaurants...

traffic can be a pain at times, but nowhere near as bad as traffic in Houston or in California.

If you love live music, this is the place for you! And though they dont have a professional team, they do have minor league teams and the University of Texas (great football atmosphere)

There is only cons. It stinks. Live music is a joke. If you want good music, you wouldv'e had to go to New Orleans-- before Katrina. Their music was great. Traffic is the worst, it is overpriced, and I never had a problem with allergies and sore throats and getting sick from the molds until I lived here. If I could afford it I would go back to west texas.

LOVE AUSTIN. You get the big city shops with the smaller town atmosphere. Be where ..it may seem big, but austin can be vey small.

Never been, but they are the largest city without an NFL, MLB, NBA or NHL team.
