Austin

I am from LA, actually West LA and wanted to know if it will match the diversity I am used to. I have read it is much more humid than California but LA has become kind of tropical in the summer with rainstorms out of nowhere. never happened 20 years ago, global warming I guess..
Anyway, if anyone is a transplant from Culver City, or west LA how does it compare. ?
is it like I heard from some posters?
the whites on newer west side of town and blacks and latinos the east side , poorer part of town.
isn't there a class of blacks and latinos in Austin that are doing well too.?
I'd like to own my house free and clear in 10 or 15 years . I just don't see that happening in California
Also, any health food stores like Trader Joes, tennis and golf clubs..etc.

I have an opportunity to interview with a company in Austin as an outsides sales/marketing trainee. I have lived about an hour from Dallas for the last 17 years and before that in a small town outside Lubbock. I have only been to Austin twice (once when I was 12 and again when I was in college for an afternoon baseball game). I don't know much about living expenses or school systems ( I am a single mom to a ten year old), nor have I lived in that big of a place before.

What can you tell me that would help me make an informed decision on whether the move would be a good one?

I just moved to Austin. I'm not that into music. I go to Nuno's to listen to live blues more than I'm interested in any rock or punk. And I don't think Austin has enough - or any - good country venues besides Broken Spoke. But hey, that's just me. I'm old school and I like my dives smelly and empty.

Here's my question: Say I want to go over to 6th during the week to grab a beer at Chuggin Monkey or Maggie's. Will it be a big deal to do that? Crowded, with a cover?
I don't have a wristband or whatever, if I feel like going there, can I get in to see a band for a normal cover charge (less than $10) or will I get screwed like a conference tourist?

I don't get SXSW. I know it's cause I haven't been. But walking up and down 6th, what will that teach me? I think it's gonna screw up my St. Patty's day plans, will it?
