Since you're with your family, I doubt you'll be able to check out SXSW to it's full advantage, and I don't think you're going to want to go to sixth street either, so I would reccomend Barton Springs in downtown Austin.
It's one of the largest swimming pools in the U.S. and is always 68 degrees in any weather, so even if it's cold you can still go swimming. The bottom of the pool is unpaved, natural rock, so it's really fun to snorkel or even dive around with goggles in the crystal clear water, looking at all the fishies. The kids will love it. You will too. It's my favorite place in Austin.

What about that bridge by the river in Austin?? where all the bats are? Saw a special on it. Lots of shops and cafes where people go at dusk to watch thousands of bats go out hunting. I'd love to see that.
Where is the Alamo?

If "quaint" is to your liking, try Castroville. A day trip for you from Killeen (or an overnight), you can spend an afternoon walking around the historic town, and in the evening, it has some of the *BEST* Alsatian dining anywhere! I *HIGHLY* recommend "La Normandie." Stay at the Best Western.

Each time I travel downstate, I enjoy the BEACH SHORES. I have travelled down to San Marcos many-a-time just to walk the shorelines and enjoy the mist in the air!
Or try travelling a bit north (North of Lubb.) to enjoy the wide-open prarie lands (just as vast as any beachline!)

Check out the South By Southwest music festival in Austin this weekend. It's the best music festival in the US.
