I just moved to Austin. I'm not that into music. I go to Nuno's to listen to live blues more than I'm interested in any rock or punk. And I don't think Austin has enough - or any - good country venues besides Broken Spoke. But hey, that's just me. I'm old school and I like my dives smelly and empty.
Here's my question: Say I want to go over to 6th during the week to grab a beer at Chuggin Monkey or Maggie's. Will it be a big deal to do that? Crowded, with a cover?
I don't have a wristband or whatever, if I feel like going there, can I get in to see a band for a normal cover charge (less than $10) or will I get screwed like a conference tourist?
I don't get SXSW. I know it's cause I haven't been. But walking up and down 6th, what will that teach me? I think it's gonna screw up my St. Patty's day plans, will it?
Thanks. And if you're here in Austin, uh I guess welcome!

SXSW is South By Southwest, a huge music and film festival that we're, uh, graced with each year. It features many films and music acts from all over the world but as far as I can tell it's definitely not about being an internation venue or half as cool as something like Jazz Fest....

OK well we hopped in a cab and went downtown last night. It was so fun! We saw Buttercup and MXDX. It was not as crazy as I thought. It had a fun Mardi Gras sort of vibe about it.The industry types are around but I saw alot of local types. I must say, I can see why it's so important to this city, all the vendors were going crazy with business.
So I definitely see the downside, but on the upside it's good time if you go w/ the right attitude. :o)
