I'm driving up from San Antonio w/ my family to visit Austin on Saturday. It's only going to be a one day trip. I've already visited the capital. What are fun things to see and do? What are good places to eat?

Please keep in mind this is for me, my wife and my daughter.

well on Saturdays there are two farmers markets. One is Downtown on 4th and Guadaloupe
http://www.austinfarmersmarket.org/
and the other is at 290/71 and Brodie. http://www.austinfarmersmarket.org/

they are both fun and have fun things for the kids. Another option is the children's museum they have fun things going on all the time.
Zilker park is fun for a picnic and they have a train for kiddies to ride. But not sure how old your daughter is.. (if she is older & like shoping hit up South Congress.. )you can go by the New Whole foods & grab your goodies.

For good food well it depends on what you like & how much $$ you want to spend.
closer to Zilker park is Shady grove kid friendly - moderate. www.shadygrove.com
There are a few other spots on this strip which are good too.

Quality Seafood market - very good & laid back they have a bit of it all and not all of it is fried. sometimes has music on the weekends. - inexpensive

Freddies place - great patio has kids play area, washers burger type food w/ some tex-mex thrown in. one of my fav's.
Closer to downtown. You can also check and find out if the bats have started there nightly run on Congress bridge.

OR even just taking one of the boats up town lake, you can also rent canoes and take one out. don't know how adventurous you are. but they are fun..

Some austin sites to check out might be
www.auschron.com
www.austin360.com
they usually list some of the happenings around town.

OK well hope this helped some. Enjoy!

Excellent question--we Austinites love to argue about the best stuff to do around here!

My picks for What to Do:
-Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center
-The Arboretum (it's an outdoor mall, plus a park that's very kid-friendly, plus has an Amy's outlet--the best ice cream in the universe)
-Go to an Austin Toros (our NBA d-league team) or Ice Bats (hockey) game
-Speaking of bats--gotta see the bat colony under congress st. bridge. They fly out every night around sunset. Biggest urban bat colony in north america. Awesome.
-Austin Children's Museum (depends on how old your daughter is
-The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum--it's right near the capitol, actually. SO much fun. There's an IMAX theatre there, too.
-The new Blanton Museum of Art (on the UT campus)

As for what to eat...oh my gosh, we have so many yummy restaurants...maybe post here again when you know either what kind of food you want or if there's an attraction you'd like to find food in the neighborhood of?

Another good resource for events and food is
www.austinchronicle.com
You can search for goings-on by date and for cuisine by type, location, etc.

Go out and have some fun. Something you can't do on Fridays because they are technically a weekDAY and not part of the weekend
